Character experience

Zheng Zhouyong was born in a poor peasant family in Tongchuan County, north of gangwon, Democratic People's Republic of Korea. After graduating from primary school, he worked everywhere to make a living. At first, he was a wheelbarrow worker. By 1942, he had opened an auto repair shop with little money. After the Korean War, he finally gained a place in the construction industry with the help of his experience as a wheelbarrow worker, and laid the foundation for future cooperation with Ford Motor Company because of the construction of military camps and military maintenance vehicles by Korea and the United States.

Kaimi branch

191511,Zheng Zhouyong was born in a poor peasant family in Tongchuan county, gangwon, central Korea. There are eight brothers and sisters in the family, and he is the boss. Since he is 10 years old, his father woke him up at 4 am in 15 and took him to work in the fields at night. His father asked him to set an example for his younger brothers and sisters and be a down-to-earth farmer.

Working hard day after day, Zheng Zhouyong is eager to get out of the countryside, out of the world and live a good life. At that time, there was an East Asia Daily in the warden's home, and Zheng Zhouyong went to the warden's home to read it every day, hoping not to be out of touch with society. From then on, he wanted to go out and see the outside world more and more.

After graduating from 193 1 primary school, Zheng Zhouyong ran away from home four times, but every time he went out to look for a job, he was brought home by his father. Once, in order to save enough money, he sold the most valuable things in his family-two cows, and his father was helpless.

1935, Zheng Zhouyong ran away from home for the fourth time. He came to Incheon Wharf alone as a coolie, worked as a worker in Seoul for nearly a year, and finally found a well-paid job in a rice shop before he could settle down. This was the first turning point when he ran away from home many times, when Zheng Zhouyong was less than 20 years old.

Zheng Zhouyong's hard work in Midian won the appreciation of his boss and established good relations with some customers at that time, which laid the foundation for the future. 1938, here comes the opportunity. The owner of the rice shop was seriously ill and his only son had nothing to do, so he gave the rice shop to the penniless wage earners for free. In an instant, he changed from a buddy to a shopkeeper.

He used the money he earned to buy land for his family. At the age of 22, he was ordered to marry Bian, the daughter of his parents. They had a hard time together. At one time, his wife went to the roadside to sell tofu to support her family.

But not long after, Japan's war of aggression against China broke out, and Japan imposed a ration system on North Korea and ordered all rice shops to close. The early death of Midian gave Zheng Zhouyong a great impact, but he didn't lose heart. He borrowed money to start a profitable auto repair industry at that time, but the factory was destroyed by a fire five days after its opening. It seems that God is going to test this man's endurance!

But Zheng Zhouyong is not discouraged, because he has no time and right, because this family of more than 20 people depends on themselves. I have to borrow money again. What moved Zheng Zhouyong was that when he borrowed money from old customers, people lent it to him without saying anything, because he had a good reputation. This lesson made Zheng Zhouyong understand a truth: Reputation is everything!

On February 1940, 1, he raised funds to re-establish the "Adao garage" specializing in automobiles. During the operation, he also learned the knowledge of automobile principle and engine structure. At that time, Adao garage had 160 employees, which was a big enterprise, but Zheng Zhouyong had nothing but pickles and a bowl of porridge for breakfast every day. Zheng Zhouyong's mother and wife are too busy cooking for the workers every day. It is because of such efforts and diligence that the factory is getting stronger every day.

1945, the day of national celebration, Japan was defeated and surrendered, and the US military auctioned real estate. Zheng Zhouyong and a few friends bought a confiscated property in Seoul for auto repair, so the "Hyundai Motor Industry Society" was put up first. At that time, many American vehicles were stationed in south Korea. Zheng Zhouyong has won the trust of customers because of its rich maintenance experience and good technology. In less than a year, the factory in Zheng Zhouyong has developed into a large-scale repair shop with nearly 100 people.

In post-war Korea, everything was in ruins. Smart Zheng Zhouyong saw that the profit from car repair alone was still too small, and construction should be a new industry. At that time, the US military had many advantages for the construction industry. On May 25th, 1947, the sign of "Modern Civil Architecture Society" was hung next to the sign of "Modern Automatic Vehicle Industry Society". Many friends advised him not to be familiar with it and not to set foot in industries he was not familiar with. Zheng Zhouyong said, "I have worked in the dock and have more experience than anyone." Insist on opening despite friends' persuasion. This day was1May 25, 947, and later became a "modern" birthday.

Start with architecture.

At the beginning, Modern Civil Engineering was just one of many second-hand contractors. Thanks to Zheng Zhouyong's efforts, he finally gained a foothold in the construction industry. 1950 10 year 10 month 10, Hyundai Motor and Hyundai Civil Engineering formally merged to form Hyundai Construction Company. Just when the Korean War broke out, Zheng Zhouyong took over many American projects and made a lot of profits. However, God once again put the frustration before Zheng Zhouyong.

The Gaolingqiao project from April 1953 to May 1955 was a great difficulty he faced. Gaolingqiao project is sponsored by the government. Because it is located in the main traffic road, the construction is difficult, but the profit is also considerable. After many twists and turns, Zheng Zhouyong applied for this project, but it is much more difficult to do!

At that time, although the modernization was well funded, the equipment was extremely backward. At the beginning of the project, many disasters were encountered. Gaoling Bridge is a flash flood-prone area, and its piers are easily washed away by floods. And so on and on. One year has passed, and the pier 13 has not been repaired, but the price has risen rapidly, and the expenditure before the end of the project has greatly exceeded the budget. Modern architecture is facing a serious financial crisis!

But Zheng Zhouyong is a man of his word. Even without money, he is determined to finish the project and pay the workers' wages. In desperation, the whole family sold the house and raised 99.7 million cash, which saved the modern construction. Although the project lost more than 65 million yuan and paid a heavy price, Zheng Zhouyong also gained something that money can't buy-credibility! To this end, the Korean government spoke highly of this project and played a great role in undertaking government projects in the future.

From this failure, Zheng Zhouyong learned that it is not enough to rely solely on diligence and hard work, and technology is also crucial, and updating equipment can be invincible! After updating equipment and adjusting technology, modern architecture quickly entered the top six in the construction industry.

1967, at the request of President park chung-hee, Zheng Zhouyong undertook the Jingfu Expressway Project, which is the first expressway in Korean history. Its success or failure is not only a personal problem, but also related to the honor or disgrace of the country. After nearly two years' efforts, the whole expressway was finally completed, and Zheng Zhouyong also won a "Bronze Tower Industry Medal".

Zheng Zhouyong's eyes were fixed on foreign countries. After all, there are so many Koreans and so few people, which restricts the pace of enterprise expansion to some extent. As a result, Zheng Zhouyong began to base itself on South Korea and face the world. Despite the constant losses at the beginning, Zheng Zhouyong thinks that this is the tuition that should be paid, and it needs failure to succeed!

At that time, the evaluation of Zheng Zhouyong by Korean economic circles was that his commercial energy was in the domestic market, but he could not rashly enter the foreign market. However, Zheng Zhouyong did not believe in evil. 1976, in the bidding for the international project of Jubail Industrial Port in Saudi Arabia, the winning bid was 931440,000 US dollars, which beat the big companies in the western developed countries such as the United States, Britain, Germany and Japan, and won the bid with high quality ahead of schedule.

Since then, Zheng Zhouyong's modernization army has entered the Middle East and is invincible. Almost all large-scale construction projects in the Middle East have been undertaken, and the cause of "modernization" is in full swing.

Car dream

Don't forget, Zheng Zhouyong's dream started with car maintenance, so he also has unusual feelings for cars. Although he made great efforts in the construction industry, he never forgot the car. The huge profits earned in the construction industry made him realize his dream of car.

Driven by the wave of construction after the Korean War, Zheng Zhouyong established Hyundai Motor Company on 1967+02. Newborn automobile manufacturers first choose Ford's British branch as a partner, that is, Ford is responsible for providing Hyundai with the necessary technology to produce cars and light trucks.

However, Ford is indifferent to modernity. They think that even if they produce cars, they can't make much money in a small market like Korea, so they make things difficult. Finally, Zheng Zhouyong made a crucial decision: to terminate the cooperation with Ford and make his own car.

1976 65438+1October, by introducing the model of George Dumble's design studio, using the production technology learned from Japan and Britain. Hyundai's first independent model "Pony" has finally been put into production. This mini-car has been a great success in the domestic market, making Hyundai Motor the first in the domestic market for 20 consecutive years. Become a real dark horse in the auto market.

More importantly, in 1992, Hyundai proudly launched the first concept car, HCD-I, which was successfully developed independently at the Detroit Auto Show. With its smooth lines and avant-garde modeling, it immediately conquered North American fans against the backdrop of two bright eagle-eye headlights. The most "terrible" thing is that the price of this two-seater sports car is only 1.4.

Modern spirit

In South Korea, Zheng Zhouyong is extremely rich, and Koreans call him the richest man in South Korea. Zheng Zhouyong doesn't think so. He said that he was just a rich laborer, using labor to produce wealth.

Zheng Zhouyong thinks that if a person works with 10 times energy, he will get 10 times reward. He often tells his experiences to employees. He said that when I was working in the rice shop, it took me an hour and a half to get from my place to the rice shop in order to save 5 cents on bus fare. Afraid of waste shoes, simply nail a nail in the sole. At that time, I never bought newspapers. I always go to the rice shop to read the newspaper bought by my boss. At that time, my monthly salary was a bag of rice, and I had to save half every time. In the process of rapid urbanization in South Korea, egoism, money first, extravagance and decadence have begun to spread. In order to get rid of these bad tendencies and re-establish a new mental outlook, the Korean government actively guides its citizens to be diligent and thrifty.

Zheng Zhouyong strongly supports this. He said to the young workers, "Don't buy a TV yet. I don't even have my own room, so where can I put the TV? A radio is enough to let you know about world events. It's best not to smoke or even drink coffee. Before starting a family. The company gives you work clothes, even underwear, as long as you have a suit to meet your mother-in-law. When I was young, I only had one set of spring and autumn clothes, and I added an underwear in winter. I have had a good year. "

In addition to thrift, Zheng Zhouyong's mode of operation also has an important point: advocating "on-site firstism". He believes that shopping malls are like battlefields, and it is impossible for a commander to win unless he personally directs the battle at the front.

Zheng Zhouyong is the busiest person in Hyundai Group. He gets up at 4 o'clock every day. He read the report while listening to it, so as to keep abreast of the trends of Hyundai Group. Most of his time is spent on the construction site. He can be seen wearing military boots and overalls in the construction site of Kyukuba Expressway or Ulsan Shipyard, and in Bahrain and Jubail. As soon as I arrived at the construction site, I could hear his roar: "Hurry up! Quick! " As soon as Zheng Zhouyong came to the construction site, modern workers said, "Here comes the tiger." Zheng Zhouyong is a veritable "site tyrant".

This is the modern spirit, which Zheng Zhouyong proudly summarized as "creativity, pioneering, perseverance and diligence".

But Zheng Zhouyong was not satisfied. He also entered politics ambitiously. 1992, at the age of 77, he ran for the presidency of South Korea, breaking the convention that businessmen don't go into politics, although he failed in the end. During 1998, Zheng Zhouyong drove hundreds of cows across the "38th parallel" and directly entered North Korea. This "scalper diplomacy" is a milestone in the peace talks between North and South Korea.

Until his death, Zheng Zhouyong was still busy. Although he only served as the honorary chairman of the group, he was called "Chairman Wang" and still insisted on coming to work in Seoul headquarters every day. This is Zheng Zhouyong, a man who never stops!

Chetan dark horse

Taking advantage of the great opportunity of the construction industry, Zheng Zhouyong established a modern external behavior foundation by trading and manufacturing machinery and auto parts in 1962, and cooperated with Ford Motor Company in1967+February to establish a modern automobile and formally March into heavy industry. In the early days, Ford Corte-ira and Granadae were used as benchmark cars to develop cars suitable for use in Korea, and the results were average.

Maybe the business philosophy can't resonate. 1967, Zheng Zhouyong signed a technical cooperation with Mitsubishi automobile department to develop a small carriage. Due to Mitsubishi Automobile Factory's full support for technology transfer, this compact, economical and fuel-efficient small carriage has good performance and practicality, and has won favorable comments at home and abroad after listing. It was the first time I entered North America, and it was packed.

The good momentum of Hyundai Motor Factory's "Pony" team heading for North America, the world's largest automobile market, made Zheng Zhouyong realize that "high quality" is the guarantee of being in an invincible position. Therefore, it not only invested huge sums of money in R&D departments, but also constantly updated various production equipment with the technical support of Mitsubishi Motors, such as the latest computer-controlled robots and various test instruments that meet the standards of MIRA in Britain and MC in Japan, so that the products are complete from materials, parts and finished cars. In addition, a 20-kilometer-long annular proving ground will be built in Ulsan Automobile Factory, and the test results of the prototype car under design and the new car just off the production line under various road conditions and roads will be grasped at any time as a reference for immediate improvement and correction.

These efforts and persistence have paid off, and the newly modified pony car came out at 1983, which was exported to Canada in large quantities and received rave reviews. Later, 1.6L "Star" was introduced, and the export was also very successful. Hyundai Motor Factory set up a factory in Canada in the same year and produced new cars nearby. 1985, the Excel car developed to meet the demand of North America was accepted by North American consumers as soon as it went on the market. 1985 set a record for the champion of imported cars in Canada in that year with an unprecedented sales volume of 85,000 cars, and sold/kloc-0.7 million cars in the United States in the same year, becoming a dark horse admired by people all over the world.

operating system

Zheng Zhouyong is not complacent about these achievements. He not only wants Hyundai to have the first market share in Korea, but also wants to take the initiative and lead the world automobile market. Therefore, he insisted on the ability of independent development. As early as 1976, that is, eight years after the establishment of the factory, Hyundai Motor Factory had its own successfully developed new model, 198 1, which was a joint venture with Mitsubishi Motors (funded by Mitsubishi 10%). To 1983, it developed the second new model, 1985, in Quebec, Canada.

In view of the trend of electronic automobile industry, Zheng Zhouyong established Modern Electronics on 1982, which has become a powerful backing for modern automobile modernization. Hyundai Motor Factory strives to achieve the goal of 95% autonomy. 1988, Hyundai Motor Factory independently developed a brand-new jet fuel supply system engine, which is the result of cooperation between Hyundai Motor Factory and downstream manufacturers. Zheng Zhouyong continues to promote independent research, development and manufacturing of materials and parts.

In addition, it is worth mentioning that most of the production machines and tools in modern automobile factories, including computer hardware equipment, are made in China. At the same time, in order to improve quality control, the Japanese-style "real-time control system" is not adopted, but a high-level vertical integration mode is implemented, with an average annual output of 65,438+0,654,380+0.5 million passenger cars.

At present, Hyundai Motor Factory sells four kinds of cars in 128 countries and regions around the world, including Exc-el, Elantra, Sonata and coupe sports car sharing the platform with Elantra. Elantra won the championship of mass production car group in 1992 and' 93 Australian cross-country races, and won the title of the most worthy medium-sized RV in the British automotive professional magazine "WhatCar"; Excellent selection 1994 CarBook best safety small RV; Sonata landed in Chinese mainland at the beginning of 1993, and sold 40,000 vehicles in May.

Business philosophy

Hyundai Motor can surpass South Korea's most historic and largest Kia Automobile Factory in a short time and become famous in the world automobile industry. Zheng Zhouyong's unique business philosophy-"fieldism" is the key to success: not only does he want all his younger brothers, eight sons and son-in-law of 1 to be in the front line of business, but he also often works "on the spot". He boldly launched the cadres of the Ministry of Science and Technology that South Korea has been ignoring. These managers who focus on the "site" naturally become Zheng Zhouyong's "sensors" at various sites, and fully grasp the real-time situation of related enterprises.

Unfortunately, however, in July of 1987, the problem of "strike" began to appear and quickly spread to the whole modern enterprise group. Therefore, the "labor-capital agreement meeting" composed of 12 enterprises in the group requested Zheng Zhouyong to withdraw from the business lineup. Finally, after the decision-making power and management power of wages were handed over to the general managers of various companies, the strike storm subsided, but six enterprises in the group.

Constant labor disputes have caused Hyundai Group to lose a lot of business opportunities and achievements. During the strike of Hyundai Ulsan Automobile Factory in June, 1 992, the loss affecting exports to Europe and Asia-Pacific region exceeded US$ 654.38+25 million, which did not include US$ 5.3 million needed for repairing factories and equipment. However, Zheng, the heir of Hyundai Motor, inherited his brother's spirit and practiced the "scene". It seems that the elegance of Hyundai Motor in the world automobile industry has not diminished.

Rank among the top five

In fact, Zheng Zhouyong once faced such a question, "Will we continue to produce cars? Important supporting moment: 1980, the newly elected government of Quan Douhuan made great efforts to promote political integrity. In order to effectively improve the serious situation of social inequality between the rich and the poor, it took various measures to curb the influence of consortia, and resolutely took measures to adjust the heavy chemical industry in August 19865438 and February/year.

Faced with these two powerful adjustment measures by the government, Zheng Zhouyong can only choose living space between "enriching power generation equipment" and "developing automobile industry". As a result, he chose to develop the automobile industry without hesitation, and even refused to accept 50% of GM's automobile investment, and entered the era of "Korean automobile" industry with independent development, production and sales. Modern goals,

However, to achieve the goal of the top five in the world, Hyundai still has a lot to go, such as entering the China market. Entering the China market is a new topic in modern times. The successful experience of Canadian and American markets may not be applicable to China market, because the current China market is similar to the Korean market in the early modern times, and cars are still in the transitional stage from wealth and status symbols to household consumer goods. Although the China market is small and the demand is scattered, it is a key link to realize the dream of the top five modern automobiles. According to statistics, China will become one of the largest automobile markets in the world within ten years.

In 2000, Hyundai Motor set up the "China Headquarters" of Hyundai and Kia in China, focusing on developing the China market. Hyundai has opened more than 60 service outlets in China, supplying automobile maintenance equipment and orthodox parts. More importantly, in 2002, Hyundai Motor and Beijing Automotive Industry Holding Co., Ltd. jointly established Beijing Hyundai Motor Co., Ltd., which received the full support of relevant state ministries and commissions and Beijing Municipality. The sales momentum of Hyundai Sonata and Elantra cars is good, and Elantra even bounced back when the domestic 10 car market was bleak, and achieved a good monthly sales of10.3 million cars.

From 1967 to now, Hyundai is really too young compared with the century-old brands we know, but it is this newborn calf that shows us the hope and position of Korean cars in the world automobile industry. According to this "modern speed", the "modern goal" of the fifth place in the world is not a miracle.
