Jidong County is named after it is located east of Jiguan Mountain. The jurisdiction of Jidong County was originally under the jurisdiction of Jixi City and Mishan County. On June 5, 1964, in order to solve the problem of Mishan County being too large and Jixi City's suburbs shrinking, the Provincial People's Committee submitted to the State Council for approval to establish Jidong County. The 10 communes of Hada, Yinfeng (formerly Pingyang) commune, Zhangjia Street Agricultural Brigade in Jixi City and Jilin, Xialiangzi, Pingyang, Yongan, Zonghe, Donghai, Xinglong, Yonghe, Xiangyang and Mingde in Mishan County were divided It belongs to Jidong County and is the administrative region of Jidong County. The county seat is located in Pingyang Town. It is under the jurisdiction of Mudanjiang District. After preparatory work for the establishment of the county, Jidong County was officially established and began operations on January 1, 1965. In 1967, the area was renamed as a district and came under the jurisdiction of Mudanjiang District. On September 3, 1983, the State Council approved it and placed it under the leadership of Jixi City.
