Zhang Yimou, born on April 2, 1950 in Xi'an, Shaanxi Province, is a Chinese film director and one of the representatives of the "Fifth Generation of Directors". He has received honorary doctorates from Boston University and Yale University in the United States.
In 1978, he entered the Photography Department of Beijing Film Academy to study. After graduation in 1982, he was assigned to Guangxi Film Studio. In 1984, he served as a cinematographer for the first time in the movie "One and Eight" and won the China Film Outstanding Cinematographer Award. In 1986, he starred in his first movie "Old Well" and won three Best Actors. The first film "Red Sorghum" directed in 1987 won the Golden Bear Award at China's first international film festival. From then on, he began to realize the trilogy of his film creation, moving from photographer to actor, and finally to director career.
