Why should the Empress Dowager of Qing Dynasty be called "Lafayette"?

The reason why the Qing emperors used the name "Lafayette" was because the ancestor of Manchu, the leader of the Jurchen nationality, was first called "Manzhu". "Full column" is the transliteration of the Buddhist name "Manshu", which means "Buddha" and "auspicious". Later, some prominent families and hereditary leaders were named "Manzhu". After the founding of the People's Republic of China, Manchu translated "Manzhu" into "Buddha" and took it as the special name of the emperor.

It seems that Cixi is the only one who calls Lafayette as the empress dowager. However, because she was the last effective "emperor" in the Qing Dynasty, the nickname "Lafayette" of the Qing emperor later evolved into her own nickname.

Chinese emperors in past dynasties all had various titles, such as "Temple number", "posthumous title" and "honorific title", in addition, some emperors also had "special titles". For example, "official family" is the "special name" of the emperor in Song Dynasty; "Master" is the "special name" of the Ming emperor; "Lafayette" is the special name of the Qing emperor.

Some historical operas, novels and film and television dramas call Empress Dowager Cixi "Lafayette". In practice, "Lafayette" is not exclusive to Empress Dowager Cixi, but every Qing emperor can be called "Lafayette".

According to the regulations of the Qing Dynasty, "Lafayette" is a respectful title for the emperor, while Cixi, as the empress dowager, is called "Lafayette", which shows the ambition of Empress Dowager Cixi.
