What brand is Stone Island?

Stone Island is an Italian fashion brand.

Stone Island was founded in 1982 as a casual wear brand characterized by unique research on fibers and fabrics and applying innovative design. Through continuous structural research and problem solving, Stone Island has created its own brand image aimed at becoming a new symbol of the apparel manufacturing industry.

The Stone Island perfectly caters to casual sports tastes—it’s expensive, visually striking, and the branding on the sleeve allows fans to easily identify fellows without drawing too much attention. Whether Stoney likes it or not, it's inseparable from football hooliganism and you'll find Stoney's compass logo plastered across stands and football grounds from Middlesbrough to Moscow.

The origin of the Stone Island brand

Massimo is a graphic designer and intellectual born in Bologna. In the mid-1970s, he was the first person to be interested in spare military uniforms. He was the first to study the functional characteristics of these garments, cataloging different silhouettes, pockets, fasteners and accessories, and studying the appearance of wear and fading with historical flavor.

To recreate these garments, he completed an advanced garment dyeing laboratory and printing plants in the Ravarino region of Modena province. He begins by studying materials and weaving structures, then blends them, adds coatings, and dyes the finished product to transform the garments. To transform it into fabric for clothing, he stonewashes it in a machine for several hours before softening its structure through a softening process.

This first prototype had an incredible effect, but it was completely different from all C.P. products and did not fall within the scope of the logo. Therefore, we finally decided to make 7 coats from this unique fabric, called “TelaStella”, and gave the collection a name: Stone Island.
