In the early days of reform and opening up, many parents named their children reform and opening up. However, in the 1970s and 1980s, more parents began to emphasize personal struggle, strength and greatness, and the "single-name style" emerged: for example, boys were named with the characters Wei, Yong, and Jie, and girls were named with the characters Fang, Li, and Juan. The "single-name trend" is the most likely to produce hits, and it has also triggered a wave of duplicate names. According to statistics, there are nearly 300,000 people named Zhang Wei.
