Datong Coal Mine is the largest coal mine in China. It is located in northern Shanxi Province and has large reserves and many mineable coal seams with an average thickness of 30 to 40 meters. It has low ash content, less sulfur and phosphorus impurities, high calorific value, and the coal seam is stable and easy to mine. It is the largest high-quality thermal coal supply base in China. Datong-Qinhuangdao Railway is the main external transportation channel of Datong Coal Mine. ?The predecessor of Datong Coal Mining Group Company was Datong Mining Bureau.

There is no literature on when the development and utilization of coal in Datong began. However, according to the historical fact that there are many coal seam outcrops in the Datong coalfield and they have been spontaneously combusting for a long time, in connection with the Neolithic Age, the ancestors of the Efeokou site in Huairen County, adjacent to Datong, had used fire and were able to mine exposed coal seams from the valley slopes. Stone tools were made from interlayers of assemblage tuff and lamprophyre, and it is inferred that the flammability of coal may have been discovered in the Neolithic period.
