Introduction to Gensokyo area

Hakurei Shrine (はくれいじんじゃ) is the easternmost shrine located in Gensokyo. Since the only shrine in Gensokyo is Hakurei Shrine, Hakurei Shrine is generally called "shrine". Hakurei Shrine is located on the boundary of the Great Barrier. Strictly speaking, Hakurei Shrine is not in Gensokyo. Because it is located on the border, many outside items often flow into Gensokyo from here, so monsters and humans come around the shrine from time to time to collect these items. In addition, since the shrine is not affected by the power of the barrier, the Final A route ending of "Eternal Night" describes that the methods of observing the moon inside and outside the shrine are different (at this time, the eternal night mutation still continues). Hakurei Reimu lives there, and the torii gate is to the east of Hakurei Shrine. Outsiders who get lost and enter Gensokyo come here and will be led back to the outside world by Reimu. Since monsters cannot attack ordinary people in the shrine, humans who are chased by monsters will come here to take refuge. Due to Reimu's character of welcoming both humans and monsters, different monsters often gather near the shrine, so people call Hakurei Shrine "Yokai Shrine", and it is even said that monsters have taken over the shrine. Because of this, the shrine always lacks people to visit, and Reimu often laments that it cannot gather people's confidence (scent oil money), but when the "Wind God Record" was issued a request to close operations, she didn't care much.

Levels 1-5 of "Highly Responsive to Prayers." and level 1 of "The Story of Eastern Wonderland." both use Hakurei Shrine as the stage. of.

As a branch of Moriya Shrine

In "Fujinki", Yasaka Kanako plans to restore the faith of her own shrine, and one of the steps is to establish a branch of Moriya Shrine in Gensokyo. Reimu thought about it and accepted. As a result, Hakurei Shrine brought benefits such as wind and rain, abundant grains, and military fortunes to people, so it gradually became well-received and people began to come to worship.

Near Hakurei Shrine

Evil spirits and monsters appear near Hakurei Shrine every night. There is a cemetery to the west of the shrine, and these spirits are suppressed by the sun rising on the other side of the east and setting on the cemetery in the west. On the mountain behind the shrine, there is a lake leading to the dream world and a cave that serves as the door to the devil's world. The mountain behind the shrine and the lake at the back of the mountain in levels 1-3 of "Touhou Fantasyland ~ Lotus Land Story.", the cave leading to the demon world in level 1 of "Touhou Monster ~ Mystic Square.", and the night time of "Red Devil Village" On the back of the shrine, these works have used these locations as stages.

Hakurei Shrine in the outside world

Since Hakurei Shrine is located on the border of Gensokyo, it also exists in the outside world. Since the Hakurei Great Barrier is a barrier of common sense, people with knowledge of the outside world regard Hakurei Shrine as being outside, while people with knowledge of Gensokyo regard it as being within Gensokyo. However, since the establishment of the Hakurei Great Barrier, no one knows what the shrine looks like in the outside world, and no one is studying this matter now. However, it is stated in "Kourindo" that Rinnosuke once flew over the barrier to the outside of Gensokyo when the barrier weakened, and when he looked at the shrine, he saw many people gathered there. Renko Usami of "Rendai Nocturne" also had plans to go to Hakurei Shrine (from outside). The Scarlet Devil Mansion (こうまかん) is a western-style mansion built at the foot of Yokai Mountain and on the shore of Lake Mist. There are few red windows, and the passage in front of the museum is also red. There is a bell tower, which is larger on the inside than on the outside and has a basement. The owner of the Scarlet Devil Mansion is Remilia Scarlet, but since the owner is a "child", the one who actually manages the Scarlet Devil Mansion is the head maid Sakuya Izayoi. There is a red bell guarding the door to prevent the goblins on the lake from invading the Scarlet Devil Mansion. Flandre Scarlet is under house arrest in a room in the museum by her sister Remilia. In addition, there are some fairy maids living in the museum. The inside of the building was made wider by Sakuya than the outside.

The Scarlet Devil Mansion is used as the stage in episodes 3-6 and Extra of "The Scarlet Devil Village".

Great Library

The great library underground in the Scarlet Devil Mansion. Patchouli Noreki reads books here all day long, like a study. The library has neither ventilation nor sunlight, and is filled with a musty smell. Most of the books in the collection are magic books, some of which were written by Patchouli herself. There are also some books that are not magic books mixed in, most of which are books from the outside world. The fourth episode of "Crimson Demon Village" takes the Great Library as the stage.

The King of Hell determines the place where ghosts stay before they are reincarnated or become Buddhas. Although there are insect spirits in the world, they don't scream. Some living plants are mixed with plant souls and are cultivated here. Since the heaven was full, ghosts could not become Buddhas, so the underworld was crowded with ghosts, and since sending ghosts to the outside world would cause a commotion, Pluto expanded the underworld, making it very vast. The underworld connects the other side, hell, and heaven through a barrier. After the "Haruyuki Incident", this barrier disappeared. Before Yakumo Murasaki established the barrier again, it became a lawless zone where ghosts were rampant and domineering.

In "Dream Collection", the cemetery in the underworld serves as the stage for the soul monster level.

Netherworld Barrier

The barrier between the present world and the underworld. Normally, it is impossible to cross it, but after the "Haruyuki Incident", Yakumo Murasaki was re-established for some reason, allowing the underworld to be directly connected to Gensokyo. So the ghost came to Gensokyo, causing more changes. The Yumei Barrier is at the top, and the Hakurei Shrine to the east is at the bottom. The end of the fourth level of "Youyoumu" and the level of "Hanayingzhong" against the three sisters are all set here as the stage.

The stairs of Baiyu Tower

A long staircase leading to Baiyu Tower. "Youyoumu" side 5, Extra, and Phantasm all use this place as the stage. The "Hanayingzhong" serves as the stage for the soul monster level.

Shiratama Tower (はくぎょくろう)

It is a Japanese-style mansion located in the underworld. It is said to be as big as two hundred yojanas. The owner of the house is Saikyoji Yuyuko, and there are also the soul Youmu who is the garden master and guard, and many ghosts living here. Baiyokulou has a large garden filled with cherry blossoms. In spring, large swathes of cherry blossoms bloom, making it a popular tourist spot for monsters, ghosts, and humans. The sixth level of "Youyoumu" takes the garden of Baiyokulou as the stage.

The Saigyou Demon (さいぎょうあやかし)

It is a cherry blossom tree with demonic power located in Shiratama Tower. When his life was about to end, a "singer" who lived in Gensokyo a thousand years ago wished to sleep forever under this cherry blossom tree. As a result, the cherry blossom tree bloomed more and more beautifully, spreading wider and wider, causing more people to pass away here, and the tree gained demonic power. But since Youyouzi settled in Baiyulou, the Westward Demon has not bloomed again. The reason is that this tree had previously sealed a corpse, that is, the corpse of Yuyuko Saigyouji, so that she would never be reincarnated or destroyed. If the seal is unlocked, Youyouzi will enter the cycle of reincarnation again. In "Spring Snow Incident", Yuyuko collects spring energy in an attempt to resurrect the dead monster, but because Yuyuko himself will disappear if the seal disappears, it is doomed to fail, and the Westward Demon will never be able to bloom. When Yuyuko activates the spell card in "Youyoumu", "Eternal Night" and "Touhou Bunka Post~Shoot the Bullet.", Saigyouyou will appear in the background. Although the name of Saigyou Yao is borrowed from "Hanaei Tomb" as the name of the Extra level, Saigyou Yao itself does not appear in the game. In Gensokyo, there is a bamboo forest full of bamboo trees located in the opposite direction from the Youkai Mountain in the Human Realm. There is thick fog here, and the local environment changes every day due to the growth of bamboo forests. In addition, there is a certain slope, making the fairies who come here get lost. It was formerly known as "Takacho County". It is said that this place appeared in Gensokyo due to a tsunami. There is Eternal Pavilion built in the bamboo forest. Because Emperor Hatata claimed to be the master of the bamboo forest, he and Eirin worked together to prevent Eternal Pavilion from being entered by ordinary people. After "Eternal Night", Fujiwara Meihong serves as a human guide here, leading the way for the humans who come here.

The 4th side of "Eternal Night", Extra, and the 3rd side of "Glowing Needle Castle" all use this place as the stage.

Eternity Pavilion (えいえんてい) is a house built in an unknown place in the bamboo forest. Kaguya, Eirin, Suzusen, Tei and many monster rabbits all live here. Originally, this was just the place where Eirin and Kaguya lived. There has been no historical records. It became known after the "Eternal Night Incident". Levels 5 and 6 of "Eternal Night" are all set here as the stage. Pass through the enchanted forest and take the path of second thoughts to reach the Tomb of No Enchantment (むえんづか). It is located at the intersection of the barrier gap and the barrier, connecting the underworld and the Santu River. Sometimes items from the outside world can be found here. In autumn, Hibiscus flowers bloom all around. When a person who wants to commit suicide walks on this path with the flower of the other side in full bloom, the poison invades the body. Under the intersection of incredible experience and unpleasantness, the courage to live will emerge. At this time, you will want to live again and look back. So this path is called the path of second thoughts. The level between Hanayizuka and Onozuka Komachi is set here as the stage. The afterlife that can be reached after walking through the Sanjukawa River. It is governed by the members of the Right and Wrong Hall, including the Ten Kings, and serves as a workplace where the Ten Kings and their subordinate judges (Kings of Hell) continue to judge ghosts in shifts. In Gensokyo, it is played by Shiki Aihime.

The road leading to the Santo River in the Yokai Mountain can also be visited by living people. There are various shops on the road that provide services. These shops not only provide services to the dead, but also to the living people, and the income is used to solve the financial problems of the underworld.

Santu River opposite the Nakayou Road (Santu River)

The river that serves as the interface between the other side and the present world. Although this is a freshwater river, various extinct aquatic creatures live here. There is a boat floating on the river, captained by Onozuka Komachi, carrying the ghost across the river.

The tengu and kappa among them possess high technology comparable to the outside world. This is a special society based on the society established by the ghosts and gods who led the Tengu when ghosts still lived in Gensokyo. They have a strong sense of unity and will repel and drive away people from outside.

Because the shrine lacked people's faith in the outside world, Yasaka Kanako planned to gain the faith of monsters and move the Lake of the Wind God into Gensokyo together, until now. On the surface, it is dedicated to Kanako Yasaka, but in fact only Suwako is enshrined. Moriya Shrine is a cooperative operation of the two gods. Chapters 5 and 6 of "Wind God Record" use this place as the stage. This is a place where the ghosts of Buddhas or human beings who have gone through cultivation and given up all desires can go to this place for the residence of gods and goddesses. Heaven is very high in the sky above the earth. In terms of food in heaven, although there are only peaches here, these peaches have the effect of exercising. It is divided into several worlds, and together they are wider than the underworld. "The Origin of Gensokyo" records that the heaven exists in the underworld and is located high in the sky of the underworld. It is said that because the heavenly realm is saturated, there are so-called restrictions on ghosts becoming Buddhas. Yakumo Murasaki disagrees. She thinks this is a lie because the world of heaven is very narrow.

Not only people, but also monsters don't want to get close. Humans who can tolerate the miasma here can live here and protect themselves from monster attacks. In addition, the hallucinations caused by the spores of the magic mushrooms can actually increase human magic power, so people who aspire to become magicians will come to live here.

In the forest, there is the "Kirisame Magic Shop", the home of Marisa Kirisame, the "Margotroyd Mansion" where Alice Maggotroyd lives, and the "Endless Front" where the three fairies of light live. There are countless caves nearby, including those for worshiping Xuanwu, and those where light moss grows, etc. This place was formed by a volcanic eruption of Yokai Mountain long ago. Most of the humans in Gensokyo live here. There are monster sages here to protect humans from monster attacks. Gensokyo is generally called "village". There is a stone statue of the Dragon God carved by a kappa inside. The eyes in the stone statue can be used to measure the weather with an accuracy of about 70%. There are also shops specializing in youkai. The human Reimu Hakurei and Sakuya Izayoi, or the monsters Yakumo Murasaki and Kazami Yuka will come here to shop.
