Every day a little knowledge · Trivia

What we call typhoons is actually a tropical cyclone, or in other words: a tropical cyclone that reaches a certain wind power (or wind speed) is called a typhoon.

Typhoons have names such as "Yutu", "Mangosteen" and "Wukong". and most recently the "Lekima".

So are you curious how he got his name?

The typhoon naming method is determined by the 14 member countries of the Asia-Pacific region of the World Meteorological Organization. Each country provides 10 names for naming typhoons in the northwest Pacific and South China Sea.

These 140 names are used in a circular manner. The first typhoon appears with this name. The second typhoon appears, it is changed to the next name. The third time, the round continues until 140 names are reached. We’ve used them all, so let’s start over from the first name.

If a typhoon brings particularly serious disasters, the name will be removed from the 140 names and will never be used again, and the country that provided the name will provide another one. The name is added to the naming list.

In order to reduce the damage caused by typhoons, various countries have given them gentle names that are more in line with the characteristics of the country

The reason for this is that before 2000, whenever a typhoon was coming, the countries that might be affected would give the typhoon its own name, resulting in many different names for the same typhoon.

And their naming is also based on principles:

1. Each name should not exceed 9 letters

2. Easy to pronounce

3. Not the name of a commercial organization

4. There is no bad meaning in each member’s language

5. It will not cause difficulties to members

6. Obtain approval from all members

Naming will be successful if the above 6 conditions are met.

Names proposed by China so far include Dragon King, Wukong, Jade Rabbit, Petrel, Wind God, Poseidon, Cuckoo, Lightning Mother, Seahorse and Begonia.

Among them, "Dragon King" was replaced by "Sea Anemone", "Petrel" was replaced by "White Deer", and the removed "Sea Horse" was replaced by "Mulan".
