The life of Abe Seimei

The Heian Era that Seimei lived in was an era where the top officials were civilized and peaceful on the outside, but internally it was full of dirty aristocratic power struggles. Due to the incompetence of public governance at that time, the lives of the people at the bottom were miserable. In this harsh situation, the people at the bottom have questions about "why am I alive?" The capable people at the top and the losers in power also have questions: "The political situation is deteriorating, how can we save it?" Therefore, in this situation, all kinds of negative emotions filled an era, and with it came the emergence of resentful spirits, and it was the job of the Onmyoji to fight against these resentful spirits that harmed mankind. In addition, Kyoto, Japan, suffered unprecedented natural and man-made disasters at that time: major earthquakes, fires, floods and other situations continued to occur, so people were panicked, and chaos between ghosts and gods was rampant. Not only did the superiors speak with certainty, but it also became popular among the common people. The nobles believed strongly in the good and bad fortunes of directions and dates. Whenever they went out, they would choose a day and a direction. Whenever there was a disease or disaster, they would use the excuse that ghosts were causing trouble or they encountered unclean things such as hundreds of ghosts walking at night. Therefore, the nobles at that time were familiar with the various taboos of Onmyodo and strictly abided by its etiquette and laws. Even trivial matters such as getting up, washing, and eating had corresponding taboos. (This custom continued until the Meiji Restoration) The good and bad fortunes of the court's actions should also be based on this principle. Therefore, the Yin and Yang Dao at that time not only had its own department in the country - Yin Yang Liao (Yin Yang Liao was one of the six liaos under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Central Affairs, responsible for observing astronomy, meteorology, divination, formulating calendars, etc., in addition to officials, there were Onmyoji, Onmyoji, Onmyoji, Lisheng, Astronomy, Astronomy, Dr. Luk, Shouchen Ding and other staff), also affected the implementation of national policies. The Onmyodo of this period was no longer the same. This is a simple belief based on taboos and spells, but it has a certain political significance. Onmyoji therefore became active on the political stage as "national civil servants" during the Heian period. What’s even more interesting is that because Onmyodo was monopolized by the Imperial family, “folk Onmyodo” also developed among the public. Of course, these are all off-topic and will not be mentioned for the time being.

Abe Seimei is the best, most outstanding, and greatest of all the Onmyoji in the past. His ability far exceeds that of any Onmyoji of any generation. Judging from the records in the unofficial (classical) "The Story of the Past", Seimei once saw a spirit body attached to his maid when he was born. According to the records in "The Tale of Uji's Lost Relics" and "Kojidan", Seimei's body was the reincarnation of a highly accomplished monk, and he gained the ability to control ghosts, gods and spirits during his training.

Then there is the issue of the exact place of birth. In history, his birthplace is stamped with a bright red seal of "unknown". There are three main legends:

1) Osaka said: In Abenomoto-cho, Osaka City, there is Abe Seimei Shrine and Seimei’s resting place, and there are sacred festival activities. There is a stone monument that reads "Abe Seimei's Birthplace and Heritage Site", and next to it are the remains of a well that was used to heat hot water for Seimei's production. In their respective works, Sansui and Taifuku also insisted that Osaka was the birthplace of their ancestor Abe Seimei. Tsuchimikado Yasifuku and Sansui Kichiemon even reported this situation to the then shogun Tokugawa Ietsugu and Emperor Gomizuo respectively. Ietsugu, who was interested in the study of Yin Yang and the Five Elements, and Emperor Gomizuo, who had a favorable impression of the Tsuchimikado family, united for the first time. The Emperor personally issued an edict to posthumously confer the title of Seimei to the most respected minister, and sent the Ichijo family, who had a close personal relationship with the Tsuchimikado family, to the Abe Seimei Shrine in Osaka to honor Seimei with the title. The shogunate organized large-scale memorial activities at its own expense and sent important officials of the shogunate to pay homage. Since then, Osaka has been proud of being the “birthplace of Abe Seimei”.

2) Ibaraki said: According to the "Origin" included in the oldest biography of Seimei "ほきSCO", Seimei's birthplace was Cat Island at the foot of Mount Tsukuba in Hitachi Province, which is now Ibaraki Prefecture. Cat Island in Akeno Town, Makabe County. Cat Island is the old territory of the Takamatsu family. In addition, the Takamatsu family also collected "Seimei Biography" in the eighth year of Hoei's reign (1711). In the Kingdom of Hitachi, there is a record of the imperial court ordering onmyojis to be dispatched from Kyoto before Seimei was born. Although it is a research on Onmyoji, there is no conclusive evidence that Cat Island is the birthplace of Seimei.

3) Kagawa said: "Sanuki University Diary" contains records that Seimei was born in Ihara-so, Kōtō County, Sanuki Province. Also, in the "Nishizanfu Chronicle" published by the Marugame Domain, there is a record of Seimei's birth as Yusa, Kagawa County, Sanuki Province. What’s interesting is that Yusa of Sanuki Province has a close relationship with Cat Island of Hitachi Province. The place name Yusa was named after the Yusa family who was born in Hitachi Province.

The next step is the issue of origin. According to the available information, the origin of his family name began with Dayan Ming, the prince of Emperor Xiaoyuan. There is such a record in the "Kojiki": "The root of the Japanese is the country of Jiu Liu." Emperor Xiaogen ruled the world in the original palace of Qingchi... There were five sons in total of this emperor. In the days of Wagenko, Dabi Ming ruled the world, and his brother Dabi Komei's son Jian. Numahe is named as the ancestor of Abe Chen and others." The ancestor of the Abe family in Seimei's lineage is the 11th generation grandson of Ohiko Mikoto - Abe Kurahashi Maro, also known as Abe Uchimaro. Kurahashi Maro was the left minister during the Daika reform, and his son Abe, the right minister, was the right minister during the reign of Emperor Bunmu. It is recorded in "The Tale of Bamboo Cutter" that he obtained fire rat skin for Princess Kaguya. Koatsuhime, the daughter of Maro Kurahashi, was the concubine of Emperor Kotoku and gave birth to Prince Ma. She was a rival of Emperor Tenchi and was killed due to Soga Aka's brother's trick. From this, it seems that Abe Seimei was supposed to have a distinguished background and a noble birth. But why did the Abe family decline by the time it was passed down to his father in the Monogatari legend? This is indeed unknown.

According to the Abe family tree, Seimei’s father is Daizen Daifu (responsible for the emperor’s meals, an official in the Imperial Household Ministry) Abe Masukai. The 8th generation of the Abe family since Master Abe. In the legends since Kamakura, it is called Abe Yasunai, and modern research proves that Seimei's father was Taira Shomon. There is an ancient legend that Abe Seimei’s mother was the incarnation of a white fox, and recent research shows that her mother was a mountain dweller. During the Heian period, there were very few people living outside cities. They were collectively called "mountain people" and their status was not high. Abe Seimei may have deliberately concealed the truth in order to cover up the fact that he came from a humble background. However, people living in remote areas, because they are always in close contact with nature and feel the aura between heaven and earth, naturally have abilities that people in the city cannot understand. Therefore, there is no doubt that Abe Seimei inherited part of his powerful psychic abilities from his mother. Of course, there are various legends. There is another theory that it is a wandering maiden (a shrine maiden who traveled throughout Japan, the most famous one is "Izumo no Akun" in the Azuchi Momoyama period), and there is also a theory that Tachibana Fumiko was born. However, it is generally believed that the mother was a commoner so there is no record.

Relative to his complicated life experience, what is more clear to people is Seimei’s descendants. According to the records of "Anthology of Ancient and Modern Writings", "Eika Monogatari" and "Xiaoyou", his eldest son Abe Yoshihei , Dr. Ren Yin Yang. The second son, Abe Yoshimasa, is the head of Yin Yang. However, it is inevitable that there are still legends here. Another theory is that Abe Tokuyu, the son of his biological daughter Saya, was killed by Ashiya Michitoshi.

Finally, let’s take a look at the life of this enigmatic figure. Abe Seimei was born in 921 (the heyday of Fujiwara's regency politics). He has loved astronomy and astrology since he was a child. Perhaps it was indeed a kind of fate. In 960, when he was 40 years old, he became an astronomy student in the "Yin Yang Liao" and later became a doctor of astronomy. He has successively served as high-ranking officials such as Daiken Doctor, Doctor of Astronomy, Chief Accountant Gonsu, Ukurain Beitou, Harimamori, Sakyo Gondodo, etc. Historical records record that Seimei was a very capable official and was often praised by the emperor. Once, the emperor wanted to promote Seimei to Zuodainagon (a senior official from the third rank), but Seimei declined. The emperor did not give up and gave Qingming a house instead. Qingming couldn't refuse, so she had to accept. In the second year of Changbao (1000), Seimei was awarded the title of "Faqingyuan" and became a noble. In the third year of Changbao (1001), he appointed Quan Da Na Yan and Doctor of Astronomy from the Fourth Rank. This was beyond the rank of Yin-Yang Head from the Fifth Rank. Later generations also determined that the highest rank of the Yin-Yang Master was from the Fourth Rank. . Unfortunately, there are no records of Seimei from childhood to middle age. Even the surviving portraits only show her appearance after middle age. This is probably one of the reasons why it is full of mystery. Therefore, there are countless novels and biographies about his youth throughout the ages.

"Shocked before the words were finished. A collection of ancient and modern writings. Jichang Li Danma Quan Shou, the main tax assistant, Yin and Yang head, the division of superiority and inferiority, and the diagram. Doctor of astronomy. Xiaoyouji, the division of superiority and inferiority, the diagram of the division. Changhe Si In the year of 1989, he was promoted to the throne by the Imperial Order. Kannin died. Notes on major events in his life. One of the documents is selected from the "History of Onmyoji" written by the famous machine master Sansui Yoshiemon in the Edo period. "The Chronicles of Abe Seimei"; the second document is selected from the "Tsuchimikado Family Records" compiled by Tsuchimikado Yasifuku, a descendant of Seimei. The Japanese historians unanimously believe that the first document is more credible, while the second document is suspected of being subjective. But we shouldn’t blame Taifuku. After all, there are a lot of historical materials and legends about Seimei and Seimei has been dead for hundreds of years. Moreover, Taifuku is also an important minister of Emperor Gomizuo, so it is inevitable that he will not be energetic.

It can be seen from the family tree that Seimei is a descendant of the Japanese royal family. Maybe this is the reason why Emperor Gomizuo has a good impression of Seimei! -- Kamo Tadayuki

Kamo Tadayuki is a descendant of the famous founder of Shugendo in the Nara period, Yakuza Kokaku. In addition to Onmyodo, he is also proficient in many kinds of knowledge. Among many Onmyoji, Kamo Tadayuki is famous for his accurate divination. In the book "Chōno Qun Zai" written by Mitsuyoshi Sanzen, there is a record that "Emperor Murakami hid the crystal rosary in a box and ordered Tadashi to conduct divination."

The reason why later generations attributed Tadayuki to the Onmyoji was mainly because he presented the "White Guanyin Method" to Shisuke Fujiwara during the rebellion between Taira Shomon and Fujiwara Juntomo in 940 AD - this Even the eminent monks of the esoteric religion at that time did not know this code.

In addition, another great achievement of Tadayuki is: cultivating Abe Seimei, a cross-era Onmyoji talent. To this day, we can still see the story of Tadayuki guiding the young Seimei and Hoken (i.e. Tadayuki's son) to practice Onmyodo in "The Story of the Past". - Kamo Yasunori (917-977)

As Tadayuki's son, Yasunori inherited his father's business and was a famous onmyoji in the middle of the Heian period; he was also the teacher of his friend Abe Seimei's eldest son Yoshihira. At that time, society It is said that "the scale of Yin and Yang Dao in this dynasty was determined by Baoxian". Regarding the story of Baoxian being able to see ghosts and gods when he was young, "The Story of the Past" has the following record:

One day, Tadayuki took the young Baoxian with him when he went out to perform evil deeds. He sat meekly aside during the exorcism. On the way home, he suddenly asked his father: "When you were exorcising ghosts just now, I saw twenty to thirty scary-looking people walking into the temple, eating the offerings, getting on paper chariots, and then disappearing. "What on earth is that?"

Generally speaking, only those who have undergone strict training can see ghosts and gods, but the young Baoxian has been able to see ghosts without any training. Have this ability. Therefore, Tadayuki also has great hopes for this son and provides him with a comprehensive education. In addition, there is a record of a divination competition ("divination") between Hoken and Seimei in "The Story of the Past", but unfortunately the relevant content has been lost to this day.

With such excellent qualifications, Hokenori, his son Koumei and Abe Seimei further popularized Onmyodo after Kamo Tadayuki, laying the foundation for Kamo and Abe to eventually become Onmyodo sects. A solid foundation.

The works passed down to later generations by Kamo Yasunori include "Ririn" and "Hosunori", the details of which still need to be investigated. ——Kamo Koei (939-1015)

Korea is the eldest son of Kamo Yasunori, and he is also a famous onmyoji who is as famous as Abe Seimei. Since his father gave up the astronomical part of Onmyodo to Qingming, Guangrong only inherited the Li Dao theory.

Therefore, in the book "Continuation of Ancient Stories", Guangrong appears as Qingming's opponent - of course, the authenticity of it is difficult to distinguish today.

According to the records in "Midōkan Hakuki" and "Eika Monogatari", Fujiwara Michizhang often invited Seimei and Koei to his house to ask them to divine good and bad luck and predict misfortune. Like Seimei, Guangrong is often ordered to exorcise ghosts and pray to gods for nobles.

——Yuan Boya

According to the name of later generations, Yuan Boya is a famous musician with the reputation of "Three Boya". His father was Prince Katsume, the first prince of Emperor Daigo; however, due to the early death of Prince Katsume and the palace conflicts surrounding the succession to the throne, Minamoto Boya was eventually demoted to the status of a minister - but his noble bloodline still gave him the right to be born to be a prince. qualifications. During the reign of Murakami, he was even called "the nephew who is older than the emperor" (original text is "lord's elder nephew") - the reason is very simple. Murakami is the fourteenth prince of Emperor Daigo. ). As for the mother, the records only say that she is one of Fujiwara Shihei's daughters.

As for the birth and death dates of Yuan Boya, one theory is from 918 to 980. Based on this calculation, he should be about 3 years older than Abe Harumoto. Among the anecdotes about Yuan Boya in history, one of the more famous ones is that he visited Master Chanmaru every night for three years in order to listen to the secret music of Pipa. From this point of view, Yuan Boya was indeed an enthusiastic person. Musical person.

When talking about the death of Yuan Boya, another thing comes to mind - the collapse of Luo Chengmen. On July 9, 980, Luo Chengmen collapsed due to a storm. Three months later, on September 28, Yuan Boya died. In addition, Abe Seimei died 25 years later on September 26, 1005, at the age of 85.

Looking at Yuan Boya's life, it seems that he was just a person who was very proficient in pipa, flute and other musical instruments.

As for the historical relationship between Abe Seimei and Boya, it still needs to be verified.

However, most people still think that Yuan Boya is Seimei's best friend. Rika/Rika

Michimit Ashiya challenged Seimei to a duel, but failed miserably, so he had to become his apprentice. Qingming was ordered to go to the Tang Dynasty and become a disciple of Master Bodao. After cutting day lilies for three years and three months, I helped the Master build a Manjusri Hall. When he returned to China, the Master gave him a copy of "The Collection of the Golden Crow and Jade Rabbit". During his ten years away from home, his wife Lihua (also transliterated as: Lihua) committed adultery with Daoman. Daoman said to Qingming: I got a copy of "The Collection of Golden Crow and Jade Rabbit" in my dream. Qingming said it was impossible, so Daoman took it out from his pocket and showed it to him. It turned out that Lihua secretly copied it. The two argued, Daoman killed Qingming, and Lihua finally got married. Manjusri Hall suddenly burned down, and Master Bodao came to Japan knowing that something had happened to Qingming. Digging out bones, big and small, from the tomb and casting spells to revive Qingming. Seimei chopped off Doman's head and burned the manuscript. Therefore, there is a proverb in Japan: "Onmyoji does not know his own luck", which refers to Abe Seimei. (Note: Because the story of pear blossom is typical and widely spread in Japan, later generations use "pear blossom" to refer to Seimei's wife)

The only trace of Abe Seimei's wife can be traced It’s the “pear blossom” thing mentioned above. As for the so-called "Kamo Sara" or her daughter "Abe Saya" in Chinese fan fiction, or the so-called "Tsuchimikado Enhime" who is the wife of Abe Seimei, the names are all fictitious, and there is no record in the history books. It is certain It's a fabrication. Seimei's eldest son - Abe Yoshihei

Abe Yoshihei, born in 954 and died in 1026, was the eldest son of Abe Seimei. After his father's death, he became an onmyoji equal to Kamo's glory. Therefore, there is a proverb circulating among Japanese people: "Kamo has glory, and Abe has Yoshihei." Since Michio Fujiwara came to power, Yoshihei and Guangrong have been responsible for divination and holding sacrificial ceremonies for the emperor and nobles.

It is recorded in "Collection of Treasures" that Yoshihira and Koei were entrusted by Fujiwara Yoromichi to make the ghost of Prince Kuhira become a Buddha and ascend to heaven; "Japan Chronicle" and other historical records have Yoshihira serving as the Five Dragons Festival and Four Corners The record of the sacred work of the festival; "The Story of the Eternal Flower" records that Yoshihira was ordered by Yori Michio to bury and bury the child who died in dystocia (the birth of Prince Hitomi), and to plan his funeral. In addition, "Anthology of Ancient and Modern Writings" also records that Yoshihei revealed to Tanba Masatada that an earthquake was about to occur while he was having a drink with him.

Looking at Ji Ping's life, he was born as a doctor of yin and yang and an assistant of yin and yang, and he was promoted to the fourth position in officialdom. It can be said that he has achieved success and fame.

Seimei's second son - Abe Yoshitaka

Abe Yoshitaka's birth date is unknown and he died in 1019. He was Abe Seimei's second son. Yoshitsune has been very diligent and savvy since he was a child, so he has attracted the attention of Kamo Yasunori. Because Ji Chang was an upright man, he succeeded his father and became the chief of Yin Yang Lao: Yin Yang Head (1017).

As for Jichang's achievements passed down to later generations, they are mainly related to his predictions about solar eclipses; apart from this, there are no other records.

The fifth grandson of Seimei - Yasuchika Abe (one of the three famous onmyojis of the Abe family):

Yasuchika Abe (date of birth and death unknown) is the fifth generation of Seimei Sun, an Onmyoji at the end of the Heian Dynasty. Due to the important use of Fujiwara Yorinaga and Kujo Kanemi, he also served as the head of Yin and Yang (1182) - however, by the first month of the following year, no records of Taishin could be found. Therefore, some people think that the Thai marriage is not in its time. Extrapolating this forward, Tai's age should be approximately 74 years old.

As a descendant of Abe Seimei, Yasuchika indeed has the talent to become an onmyoji. He is proficient in divination and is known as the "Son of God". In unofficial history, there are many stories about Taichi's ability to slay demons. He once predicted the demise of the Taira family. Another example is that, except for being injured by lightning once, Taichi has never lost in his life. This is also one of the widely circulated anecdotes. .

Descendants of Seimei - Abe Yushu (one of the three famous onmyojis of the Abe family):

Abe Yushu (1327-1405) was in the Muromachi era. (It can be seen from this that he was one of the famous Onmyoji of the Abe family in history). He is also a household name in Japan, and he is also responsible for the change of the Abe family into the Tsuchimikado family. Due to transliteration problems, it is also called Abe's life.

Abe Yasifuku (1573-1715) was in the Edo period. He had nine emperors and six generals in his life (he was born when Emperor Masachachi was born, but died a year earlier than the Tokugawa family. Otherwise, there were seven generals). He is one of the famous Onmyoji of the Abe family in history. In the Edo period, he was regarded as the protector of the shogun family after his death because of his long life, and he was also the founder of Tsuchimikado Shinto.

But due to various reasons, we in China know very little about them. Master Zhide

The dates of birth and death of Master Zhide are unknown. As a mage, Chitoku was a monk and also worked as an onmyoji who collected commission fees and performed divination and disaster relief for others. This behavior was illegal at the time, so Chitoku himself was different from those represented by Abe Seimei. Folk onmyojis exist as a group of imperial onmyojis in the country. After the collapse of the law order system, such "unlicensed" onmyojis began to roam around more openly. Like Ashiya Michimitsu, Chitoku Master is also a Harima-ryu Onmyoji. In "The Story of the Past", it is also recorded that he used onmyoji to help the owner of the ship that was attacked by pirates to recapture the cargo ship.

Of course, the relationship between Master Chitoku and Abe Seimei is as bad as the relationship between Ashiya Michitoshi and Abe Seimei. The story also recorded in "Konsai Monogatari" describes the shikigami battle between Master Chitoku and Seimei.

Ashiya Michimitsu

As the finale of the biographies, Ashiya Michimi is indeed well-deserved. He does not belong to either of the Kamo or Abe families, but is a Harima-ryu onmyoji who wanders among the people. In the ancient books that have been handed down, Ashiya Michitenko is described as the only opponent who can rival Seimei.

Compared with Seimei's loyalty to Sekashiro and Fujiwara Michichi, Michio chose Michio's political rival Fujiwara Akimitsu as his support. However, shortly afterwards, Doman was defeated by Seimei in a curse ceremony against the Taoist priest, and was exiled to Harima by the court. Records about him can be seen in the Harimo geographical chronicle "Hoshoki" from the Muromachi period. After Domitsu's death, his descendants moved to Hinga, Miyake and other places near the Seto Inland Sea. They inherited the legacy of their ancestors and still appeared as Onmyoji in various historical eras. To this day, there are still many "Ashiya Tombs", "Doman Tombs" and "Doman Wells" left in various parts of Japan, from which we can see people's admiration for this "evil" Onmyoji.
