Sand table
In military-themed movies and television works, we often see commanders standing in front of a terrain model to study combat plans. This kind of model made of sand, war games and other materials according to a certain proportion based on topographic maps, aerial photos or on-site terrain is a sand table. Sand tables are divided into simple sand tables and permanent sand tables. The simple sand table is temporarily piled on the site with sand and war games; the permanent sand table is made of foam plastic board (or plywood), gypsum powder, paper pulp and other materials, and can be stored for a long time. The sand table has the characteristics of strong three-dimensional sense, intuitive image, easy production, economical and practical. The sand table has a wide range of uses. It can vividly display the terrain of the combat area, the composition of enemy and friendly positions, the deployment of troops, and the configuration of weapons. Military commanders often use it to study terrain, enemy situations, and combat plans, organize coordinated actions, conduct tactical drills, study combat cases, and summarize combat experience. The sand table is also often used to make models of economic development planning and large-scale engineering construction. Its image is intuitive and popular with planning decision-makers and engineering and technical personnel.
