Synopsis: Wandering childhood

In 1930s, the little boy Oliver Twist (barney clark) was abandoned by his parents in his early years and grew up alone in the parish nursery. Later, he was forced to be an apprentice in a coffin shop run by the demanding Bambao. Unable to bear the heavy labor and the abuse of his boss, he fled to the streets of London and became an orphan in Fog City. Oliver, who was alone in London, was targeted by a local pickpocket gang and tricked into a nest full of crime and filth by the sinister Fagin (Ben Kingsley). Fagin hopes that Oliver can be trained as a professional thief and become a member of his own "child theft group", thus providing him with another way to obtain ill-gotten gains. The kind Mr. Brown helped Oliver, but this was only the beginning of a series of adventures. Bad environment, heavy misunderstanding and darkness of human nature surround Oliver. He went through a lot of hardships in wandering, but Oliver always kept a childlike heart and was full of hope for life. Even Nancy, the mistress of No.2 thief Sikes, found her conscience, saw her innocent self in her innocent body, and finally risked her life to save Oliver from the thief's den. However, Nancy was killed to save the poor orphan, and the Oliver Twist finally knew his true identity after many twists and turns. ...

Behind the scenes: movie master Roman? Polanski

As a world-famous film giant, every work of Polanski is full of uniqueness, just like his typical Jewish nose and ill-fated. When he was young, his parents were put into a Jewish concentration camp, and his pregnant mother died tragically in the Nazi gas chamber. Polanski wandered around and was killed by the Germans many times. His childhood experience caused him to be withdrawn, depressed and wild, and also made his later works have a unique indifferent and cruel style.

After World War II, Polanski returned to his father and had his own movie dream while studying in a technical school. Since 1950s, he has written, directed and performed some short films one after another, and then entered the Lodz Film Academy in Poland. Since his debut, he has won a steady stream of praise and awards.

Polanski always pays special attention to real life. He not only cares about the estrangement, indifference and hypocrisy between people, but also cares about the future of mankind. The famous work Knife in the Water focuses on helpless growth, while Rosemary's Baby highlights his concern for human destiny. However, the film Rosemary's Child, which won him fame in America, also brought him bad luck. His pregnant wife and some friends were killed by a cult at their home in Hollywood. Not only that, but he was also expelled from the United States on charges of raping a young girl four years after winning another prize in Hollywood with Chinatown.

Nevertheless, Polanski still holds the belief that the ups and downs of fate can't stop artistic achievements at all, and then he created a series of classic films such as Tess, Bitter Moon and Pianist.

Making tidbits: a beautiful gift for children

Polanski, 72, said that after The Pianist, it is difficult to decide the scope of his next work. On second thought, he felt that he always owed his children a movie, although it sounded very different from his previous works. Perhaps it was because he had just become a father, a pair of children had not graduated from primary school, and his always obscure and dark perspective gradually became more childlike, so he finally chose Dickens' Oliver Twist, which impressed him deeply in his childhood.

Polanski found Ronald who won the Oscar for Best Screenplay for The Pianist. Harewood asked him to adapt the novel Oliver Twist into a Polanski-style drama. It is also painstaking to choose the little actor who plays Oliver. During the Prague auditions, Barney, 1 1 year old? Clark, with his clever but unpretentious, intelligent and melancholy temperament, fits Polanski's role design for Oliver and stands out from many candidates. Prior to this, Barney had starred in the award-winning independent film "Indulge Heart". At the director's suggestion, the little actor watched two films adapted from Oliver Twist. In this film, the director asked Barney to create a braver Oliver than before.

In order to restore the scene of London in England from 65438 to 1930, the crew studied a lot of maps and printed materials of London at that time, and even some mean streets were strictly recorded at that time. The main part of the film was shot in Prague. The site consists of five streets, a large number of markets and alleys, with a total area of over 40,000 square meters. It took only three months to build the building, and another three weeks to elaborate it. Even the bricks and tiles on the building were taken from London and copied back to Prague.

Comments: The upgraded version of Oliver Twist

Undoubtedly, this remake of Oliver Twist has attracted a lot of popularity with Polanski's fame. Previously, more than 20 versions of Oliver Twist, including cartoons and musicals, have been put on the screen and stage, but it is rare to get such attention. Even so, Polanski was not seen at the premiere in the United States, because the judge who tried him was dead, but the charges were still established. The United States is still the country Polanski yearns for, so the famous director still missed the American audience.

Perhaps the unfortunate fate did add a unique style to Polanski's works. In Oliver Twist, the director grasped the role of Oliver very well. Perhaps this profound understanding and interpretation also benefited from the bumpy childhood experience. As his fans say, Oliver in this film is the closest to the prototype in the novel. The picture of the film is like an antique English oil painting, but the dialogue of the actors obviously has a British accent of19th century, and the costumes and props are also quite clever. Although some characters and plots in the original work have not been fully displayed, the film can be called a re-creation of Dickens' novel, and an upgraded version of Oliver Twist is a successful presentation and understanding of the original work. In addition, the meticulous performance of the actors and Zhang Chi's moderate narrative rhythm are really masterpieces to be reckoned with, just like the historical reappearance of going back in time.
