The legend about Huayue Sanniang has a long history. As early as in "Guang Yi Ji" written by Dai Junfu of the Tang Dynasty, the love affair between this goddess and a scholar was recorded: A scholar came to Beijing to take an exam. , when passing through the west of Tongguan, we stayed in a small inn. After a while, a group of servants came to the inn, surrounded by a luxurious float like stars holding the moon, spreading the word that the princess was coming to stay, and asked the innkeeper to immediately cover the inn with curtains, and all the guests in the store immediately avoided. People in the four or five nearby inns were also panicked. In the rush, before the scholar could escape, the sound of the princess's float came to the door of the shop. After the princess entered the store, the guests closed the doors and windows tightly and did not dare to show their faces. Only the scholar is in a corner, unable to advance and unable to retreat. The princess wanted to freshen up and ordered her maid to check if there was anyone around. The maid said, "There must be no one!" Unexpectedly, she found the scholar hiding in the corner. All the maidservants rushed up to him, cursing the madman and asking him to practice family law. The princess ordered the scholar to be brought along, looked at him for a long time and said: "This life is dignified and elegant, and he is by no means a frivolous person. Please don't embarrass him and let him go back to his room."
The princess has washed herself. Then he ordered his maid to summon the scholar to see him. During the conversation, the conversation was very speculative, and they fell in love with each other. They only regretted that they met too late. Then the maid was asked to bathe the scholar and put on loose and beautiful clothes. The scholar looked even more handsome and elegant. According to the princess's order, a purple-red tent was hung in front of the scholar's bed, and a brocade mattress and embroidered quilt were spread on the bed. The bedding was the most luxurious in the world. The princess and the scholar thus concluded a century-old friendship.
The next day, the scholar came to the capital with the princess and stayed in the Huaiyuanli mansion arranged by the princess. He had many internal and external attendants and countless servants. His splendor and wealth were unmatched by anyone at that time. Everyone in the mansion calls the scholar the Prince Consort. When going in and out, they have fat horses and light fur coats, and they are cheering in front and behind. They are one level higher than the three ministers and the four ministers who have high positions in the court.
The scholar's parents still lived in their hometown. The princess ordered her maids to take care of their food and daily life, and sent many gold and silver items from time to time. Because of the support from the princess, the scholar's family also became a prominent noble at that time.
Time passed quickly like running water. In seven years, the princess gave birth to two boys and one girl. Suddenly one day, the princess told the scholar that she would find another bride for him. The scholar was surprised and blamed the princess for saying such things. The princess said: "I am not a mortal, and I cannot marry you for a long time. You are destined to have a human marriage, and this cannot be replaced by the love between you and me." So he chose another wife for the scholar, but their contacts continued.
The bride’s family discovered that the groom often went out for several days and did not return, so they sent someone to follow him quietly. Finally, they found out that the scholar often visited a dilapidated house. They suspected that the scholar was bewitched by ghosts and deliberately persuaded him to drink alcohol. He was drunk, and someone who was proficient in magic was invited to draw talisman seals and hide them in every corner of the scholar's clothes. The scholar returned to the princess's house, and the princess ordered her family to keep the scholar away. The scholar naturally didn't understand the reason, so he could only lean on the door and sigh, full of melancholy. At this time, the princess came out with a sullen face and accused the scholar: "You were originally poor, but I promoted you to be a noble person. How can I be sorry for you? Who would have thought that today you have a bride, so you are ungrateful and use talisman to seal Come and suppress me." The scholar then discovered that there was a talisman hidden in his clothes, and he was full of grievances. The princess said: "I also know that this is not your fault, but the fact that this has happened means that our relationship is over. Neither of us can restore it." After that, she called her children to say goodbye to the scholar. The scholar was very sad and choked with sobs. The princess ordered her family to pack their bags and prepare to leave immediately. The scholar asked the princess her name and address. The princess said, "I am the third daughter of the God of Mount Hua." After saying that, she went out and drifted away.

On the top of the west peak of Huashan Mountain, there is a huge stone more than ten feet long that has been cut into three sections. A 7-foot-tall, crescent-shaped iron ax weighing more than 300 kilograms is stuck next to the boulder. According to legend, this is the place where Agarwood split the mountain to save her mother. The huge stone is called "axe to split stone", and the iron ax is called "mountain-breaking ax".
To know the basis of the story, we must remember that it started with the Queen Mother’s Peach Festival, when the Jade Emperor’s youngest daughter, the Third Holy Mother, and the golden boy in front of the palace came to pay homage to her birthday. During this time, they both smiled at each other. How could the solemn Peach Club tolerate such indifferent behavior? All the immortals started talking about it. When the Jade Emperor found out, he was furious and demoted the Three Holy Mothers to the Xiyue Temple, but the golden boy was demoted to the mortal world.
The golden boy was full of troubles and was born into a family named Liu. He was named Liu Xi with the courtesy name Yanchang. The Liu family loved Yanchang very much and taught him poetry every day. When he was in his 20s, he became a scholar. That year, when the emperor opened a new school, Liu Xi went to Beijing to take the exam. He passed by Huayin and heard that the Three Holy Mothers were very efficacious, so he went to the temple to ask for a fortune and asked about the journey. He looked at the beautiful and dignified statue of the Three Holy Mothers and felt awe, so he respectfully shook the lottery tube. Unfortunately, it happened that the Three Holy Mothers were out for a banquet, and the gatekeeper did not dare to grant the signature rashly. He drew the first one religiously, but it was still empty. Anxiety and fear made him shake the lottery tube again and again when he drew the third lot, and he did not dare to pick it up for a long time. The last lot fell on the ground, and he didn't have to look at it. When he looked at it, his full hopes suddenly disappeared into smoke, and his whole body went limp. It turned out that it was still a blank sign. Liu Xi calmed down and looked at the statue of the Three Holy Mothers, and wrote on the wall:
Liu Xi wrote with great anger,
Angrily complaining about the Holy Mother and the Three Mothers.
Drawing three lots in a row has no effect.
It is a waste of money to receive cigarettes here.
Write it down and walk away.
After attending the banquet, the Third Holy Mother returned to the palace happily with her feet on the auspicious branches. After being served by the gatekeeper, she told what had just happened. She looked at the poem on the wall, felt ashamed and annoyed, and couldn't help but cursed: "How dare you dare to do this, how dare you do this? If you don't teach him a lesson, how can you know how powerful I am!" So she called Uncle Feng, The Rainmaker raises a violent storm with thunder and lightning. Liu Xi was on his way when suddenly there was a strong wind, dark clouds, thunder and lightning, and heavy rain. How can a weak scholar withstand the wind and rain? He staggered and struggled to move forward. Finally, due to the rain and the slippery road, he lost his energy and fell down in the muddy water. At this time, the Third Holy Mother saw through the clouds that Liu Xi was handsome and talented, and she fell in love with him. She immediately stopped the thunderstorm, inspired a "fairy village", and married Liu Xi. One day, Yang Jian, the nephew of the Jade Emperor, came to the alchemy furnace with nothing to do. Laojun gave him some peaches. He came to the north of Xifeng, eating peaches and throwing away the pits. The peach core happened to hit Monkey King, the Monkey King, on the head. Wukong thought to himself: Who is here to bully my grandson? If you look closely, you will see that it is a small and sticky peach pit. So he covered his eyes with one hand and looked up: Ho! That boy Yang Jian is eating peaches greedily! He shouted angrily: "Ahem! Why do you use peach stones to hurt people?" Yang Jian heard the shouting and looked down. It turned out that Sun Wukong was staring at a pair of red eyes, still losing his temper. He mocked nonchalantly: "Well! What kind of immortal do I think you are? I'm not talking about it! You, a monkey, have been expelled from the name of Monk Tang and are restlessly staying in Huaguo Mountain. What are you doing here? Let alone a peach. If the core hits you, what's the problem if ten peach cores hit you?" He laughed.
After hearing these words, Sun Wukong was so angry that he scratched his head and ears and shouted: "It's so cool, I'm not ashamed!"
"What am I throwing away? Please tell me .
"
"Don't pretend to be confused, there is a scandal in your family, and you still ask others! "
"Monkey, please speak clearly. If you open your mouth to hurt others, be careful of your monkey head! ”
“Hey, it’s clear if you don’t say it, but it’s even clearer if you say it. Listen: ‘The three holy mothers in heaven were worthy of mortals, but now they are pregnant and shame all the gods. ’
Hey! whee! Hey hey hey"!
After hearing this, Yang Jian turned red with anger and shouted: "You are talking nonsense, don't spit on others. "
Who is talking nonsense, which god doesn't know."
Yang Jian was so ashamed that he couldn't argue any more. He picked up his three-pointed two-edged sword and hurried to Xiyue Temple. go.
Seeing her brother's approach, the Three Holy Mothers hurriedly saluted and said hello, brought tea and offered to sit down. Yang Jian immediately asked what Sun Wukong had said. How dare the Three Holy Mothers admit it? At this time, Yang Jian took out the gleaming and cold sword and asked the Three Holy Mothers to shine on it and blow on it. The Third Holy Mother was so frightened that she blew tremblingly. When Yang Jian saw that she was indeed pregnant, he scolded the Three Holy Mothers for being shameless, marrying a mortal privately, violating the laws of heaven, and losing her immortal body. Immediately press her under a big rock on the top of the west peak of Huashan Mountain.
Liu Yanchang and San Shengsheng got married. A hundred days later, he went to Beijing to pass the imperial examination and became the magistrate of Luozhou County. The poor Third Holy Mother suffered all kinds of suffering under that stone and gave birth to a boy named Agarwood. She was afraid that Erlangshen would hurt Agarwood, so she wrapped the baby and wrote a blood letter, and gave it to the maid Lingzhi to send to Luozhou. When Chen Xiang grew up to a teenager, he studied in Nanxue. One day, Qin Guanbao, the second son of uncle Qin, laughed at Chen Xiang because he had no biological mother and was an illegitimate descendant. Chen Xiang was furious and accidentally beat Qin Guanbao to death. He ran home and told his father the cause of the trouble. Liu Yanchang had no choice but to tell the truth. After hearing this, Chenxiang decided to go to Huashan to rescue her mother, and fled Luoyang in a hurry.
On that day, Lu Dongbin was sitting quietly on the futon with his eyes closed. Suddenly he felt his heart churning, and he calculated on his fingers that Chenxiang was going to Huashan to save his mother. I thought this was a righteous thing, and I would definitely help him succeed in one fell swoop. Lu Zu then went to the foot of the mountain to wait in person. Chenxiang went to the foot of the mountain and met a Taoist priest. He hurriedly saluted:
"Excuse me, Taoist priest, is this mountain Huashan?"
"What do you want to do in Huashan?"
"Save mother."
"Who is your mother and where is she now?"
"My mother, the Third Holy Mother, daughter of the Jade Emperor, was pinned under a rock on the mountain by my uncle Yang Jian. , so I came here to save him."
In the original story, Erlangshen, the brother of the third wife of Huayue, did not appear, and the scholar did not even have a name, but there was a plot that she fell in love with the scholar and gave birth to children. .
Huayue Sanniang has her noble bloodline and status. In myths and legends, the Erlang God Yang Jian is said to be the nephew of the Jade Emperor. Naturally, Huayue Sanniang is the niece of the Jade Emperor; she is named the Goddess of Huashan. That is, the Three Holy Mothers of Huashan dared to love an ordinary scholar in the world. This was a great feat in the feudal era, so they were deeply loved by the masses. As a result, the story of Huayue Sanniang was continuously incorporated into rap literature and drama by later generations, and was widely circulated among the Han people. Due to people's continuous improvement, the story of Huayue Sanniang has become more and more rich, tortuous and touching, and Huayue Sanniang has also become an influential goddess among the Han people.
Qin'an County is located in the north of Tianshui City, with a total area of ??1,601 square kilometers, a population of 491,478, and 1,629 villages (according to statistics at the end of 1989). In addition to the famous Dadiwan site, more than 90 ancient cultural sites have been discovered in the territory. Because it is widely said to be the place where Fuxi was born, and where Nuwa was born, grew up, and was buried, it is known as the "Xiliwa Township" and the "Hometown of the Two Emperors."
In Xingquan Village, which is only across a bridge from Qin'an County, the most believed "Fang Shen"[36] is Sanniangniang, also known as "Three Holy Mothers" and "Third Masters". [37] When we came, the village was holding a temple fair for the Three Holy Mothers. The conference period lasts from the 12th to the 15th and 16th of July in the lunar calendar.
There is a plaque hanging above the gate of the Notre Dame Palace with the words "Our Lady of Waxiang" written on it. There are couplets on both sides of the door.
One of them is
The Emperor Xi hoped that a healthy child could chase the sun if he had no ambition
The goddess of Wa Township had talent and could mend the sky
In the main hall of the palace There are also couplets hanging on both sides of the gate. One of them is marked as a gift from believers and disciples in the 34th year of Guangxu's reign in the Qing Dynasty. It is the famous An Weijun "Xunmu" who was the consultant of the Rites Academy of the Qing Dynasty and the censor of Fujian Taoism. The couplet reads:
The predecessor of Emperor Wa, who had the skill to mend the sky, was awarded the title of Shuangfengque.
Qin Yi Kuang was my hometown and it rained in time. My soul is pointing to Jiulong Mountain in the distance.
After asking several leaders and old gentlemen in charge who organized the meeting, we were also told: Qin'an is the hometown of Empress Nuwa; Sanniang was originally the reincarnation of Emperor Wa, so she was very talented. It seems that the concept that "the Three Holy Mothers are the reincarnation of Nuwa" has not only been circulating here for a long time, but is also recognized by people from both upper and lower classes.
There are many rumors about the miraculous effects of the Three Holy Mothers here. Although some people know the mythical story of Nuwa patching up the sky and creating man, generally speaking, people's belief in Nuwa is far less than their respect for the Three Holy Mothers. It can be seen that Nuwa's supreme status in some local Han folk beliefs will be rivaled by later gods (such as the Three Holy Mothers, Guanyin, etc.) and may even be completely replaced. However, because Nuwa's influence is more long-lasting and her outstanding achievements have long been deeply rooted in the hearts of the people, people often associate some later gods with Nuwa in various kinship, rank, generation, etc. relationships to mark their Extraordinary life experience and vast divine power.
One year, it was the birthday of the Queen Mother, and a peach party was held. All the gods in the sky came to the banquet and to pay their respects to her birthday. The Jade Emperor's granddaughter, the Third Holy Mother, and the golden boy in front of the temple also came. During the birthday greetings, the two of them smiled politely at each other because they had known each other before. However, that is the hierarchical heaven, how can the solemn Peach Club tolerate such frivolous behavior? The immortals were talking a lot. When the Jade Emperor found out, he was furious and demoted the Three Holy Mothers to the human world.
People affectionately call the Third Holy Mother Sanniangniang. She is smart, beautiful, kind-hearted, gorgeous and graceful. When there is a drought, she can summon the wind and rain; when there is a flood, her spinning power is unstoppable. When the villagers come to ask her for help when they are in trouble, she always responds to their requests. Drawing lots and asking for divination are all effective. Under her care, the wind and rain here were smooth and the grain was abundant. The people were very grateful and respectfully called her the Empress of Huayue Mountain. In order to repay her kindness, the people worked together to build a temple for her. As soon as the news came out. Craftsmen from all over the world volunteered to repair the temple. However, no one could come up with a twisting pattern. When everyone was worried, they suddenly felt that the sky was dark, the cold wind was blowing, and the snow was flying. At this moment, a jade rabbit ran out of nowhere and played on the snow. Everyone started talking. Came to catch this jade rabbit, but strangely, the rabbit suddenly disappeared. But where it ran, it left behind a clear picture of a palace. So the craftsmen built a majestic temple according to this plan. Named Huayue Temple. The statue of Our Lady of Xiu San is located in the Xueying Palace in the Xiyue Temple. From then on, people asked for fortune-telling, and it was extremely effective, so the palace was very popular all year round.
One spring, a young man named Liu Mingxi, courtesy name Yanchang, went to Beijing to take the exam and passed by Huayin. Hearing that the Sanniang Niang in Xiyue Temple was very effective in her kindness and salvation, he walked into the temple respectfully. In front of the incense table in Xueying Palace, he made some incense tables, arranged his face and clothes, and hung a stick of incense on the ground with fear. Got three heads. The hall was filled with fragrant mist, and the statues of the Three Holy Mothers were sitting cross-legged on the altar. They were dignified, beautiful, and lifelike. He couldn't help but feel in awe. However, unfortunately, Liu Xi's three consecutive draws were empty. Thinking of ten years of studying hard in a cold window, nine years of mental suffering, an uncertain future, and no hope of fame, I couldn't help but feel sad, so I chanted a resentment into a limerick and inscribed it on the wall of Xueying Palace. The poem is written like this: Liu Xi wrote with anger in his heart, only complaining about the Holy Mother and the Three Empresses, who lived in the shrine with a heart as iron as iron, and received incense in vain. After finishing the question, Liu Xi seemed to take a breath, brushed the dust from his sleeves, held his head high, and walked away.
The Third Holy Mother returned to the palace riding auspicious clouds. She listened to the doorman recount what had just happened, and then read the poem on the wall. She felt ashamed and annoyed. The accompanying maid Ganoderma was even more indignant and hurriedly comforted the Third Holy Mother and said: "Princess, please don't be angry. I think that crazy life has not been far away. I will definitely show him some color and avenge the princess for this insult." So the master and the servant rode up the clouds, summoned Feng Boyu Master Lei Gong and Dian Mu, and ordered them to perform the method immediately.
Liu Yanchang is on his way.
The clear sky suddenly becomes overcast with clouds, strong winds, lightning and thunder, and heavy rain. Even an ordinary person would stumble and be unable to stand, let alone a scholar who has no strength to tie a chicken? Before he could figure out the reason, he was soaked in water. Unfortunately, he fell into the mud before struggling for a few steps.
The resentment of the Third Holy Mother had been wiped away, and she was very happy. While she ordered the four immortal masters to collect the clouds and rain, she stood on the clouds and looked down carefully. Only then did she realize that the person lying on the ground was actually a delicate and fragile woman. The white-faced scholar. His blue shirt was stained with mud, his bookcase was overturned, and the four treasures of his study were scattered on the floor. At first glance, he looked like a scholar who was going to Beijing to take the exam. When I thought that this storm might ruin this scholar's future, a trace of pity and admiration arose spontaneously. She and her maid Ganoderma carried the unconscious scholar into the hut, cooked medicine and soup, made tea and cooked rice, and took very good care of him. Seeing that the scholar's clothes were thin, she covered him with her own red gauze. In the haze, the scholar felt warm all over his body. When he woke up, he saw the beautiful Three Holy Mothers right in front of him. He was really surprised and happy.
People saw the thoughts of the Third Holy Mother and the scholar, so they crowded them together laughing and talking, served them wine to congratulate them, and held a wedding ceremony for them.
People often say that there is no airtight wall in the world. Unfortunately, this story soon spread to heaven. The Jade Emperor became angry and immediately sent Yang Jian, the Erlang God, to capture the Third Holy Mother. Seeing that her brother was approaching with great force, San Sheng Sheng hurriedly saluted and said hello, served tea and gave up her seat. Yang Jian immediately asked about marrying Liu Xi, a mortal. How dare the Three Holy Mothers admit it? At this time, Yang Jian took out the gleaming and cold sword and asked the Third Holy Mother to blow a breath on the sword. The Third Holy Mother blew it tremblingly in fright. Yang Jian took a look and found that she was indeed pregnant. He scolded the Three Holy Mothers for being shameless, marrying a mortal privately, violating the laws of heaven, and violating the rites of immortality. The crime is unforgivable. However, the Third Holy Mother said that she would rather get rid of her reputation as a fairy and stay with her as a scholar. Erlangshen became angry and ordered the heavenly soldiers to rush forward to arrest the scholar. The Third Holy Mother quickly stepped forward to stop him. Erlangshen reprimanded her for committing a serious crime. Order the heavenly soldiers to arrest the Three Holy Mothers as well. In the emergency, the Third Holy Mother hurriedly took out her treasure lotus lantern. The golden light of the lotus lantern shone in all directions, illuminating the heavenly soldiers so that they staggered around and slipped away one by one, abandoning their helmets and armor.
Later, the Third Holy Mother gave birth to a boy, and the couple was really happy. The kind-hearted Immortal Perak came to visit after learning the news and named the child Agarwood. Fairies and sika deer, white rabbits, magpies and monkeys from the mountains also came to congratulate.
Xiyue Temple
Han folklore says that Xiyue Temple was built for the Three Holy Mothers, the goddesses on Mount Huashan. She is smart, beautiful and kind-hearted. When there was a drought, she summoned the wind and rain, and when there was a flood, she used her strength to eliminate it. When the villagers came to ask her for help when they had problems, they all received their requests. All their requests came true when they drew lots and asked for divination. Under her care, the wind and rain here were smooth and the grain was plentiful. The people were very grateful to her and respectfully called her "Empress of Huayue Mountain". In order to repay her kindness, the people worked together to build a temple for her. As soon as the news spread, craftsmen from all over the world volunteered to repair the temple. However, no one could come up with a construction plan. When everyone was worried, they suddenly felt that the sky was dark, the cold wind was howling, and the snow was falling heavily. At this moment, a rabbit ran out of nowhere and played in the snow. Everyone came to catch the rabbit, but strangely, the rabbit suddenly disappeared. But where it ran, it left a clear picture of a palace. So, the craftsmen built a majestic temple according to this picture and named it "Huayue Temple".
One year, the emperor opened a subject to obtain scholars, and students from all over the world went to Beijing to take the exam. Among them was Liu Xi. When he passed by the Huayue Temple, it was already dark. He wanted to continue on his way. He learned that the three holy saints in the temple were very efficacious, so he decided to ask for a fortune to inquire about his future. He prepared some incense watches, dressed himself and entered the temple gate. The hall was filled with incense and mist, and the three holy virgins were sitting cross-legged on the altar. They were dignified, beautiful, and lifelike. He was in awe, burning incense and praying. Then he drew lots very devoutly, but the three consecutive lots were all blank, and he couldn't tell. He couldn't help but feel angry. In a fit of anger, he wrote a poem on the wall to ridicule the Three Holy Mothers.
In fact, as soon as Liu Xiucai entered the temple, the Third Holy Mother knew why he came. When she saw Liu Xi, who was young, handsome, and dashing, she fell in love at first sight and fell in love with him, but she did not dare to violate the rules of heaven. After thinking about it, she still couldn't make up her mind, until the scholar became angry and wrote a poem and left. She was anxious, thinking that although she was a god, she was subject to many constraints in heaven. If she married a mortal, wouldn't she be free and happy? Even if it breaks into pieces, it's worth it. So she cast a magical spell called Rainstorm, which caused the scholar to have a pouring rain on his head and a muddy road under his feet.
Afterwards, she put aside the storm and inspired a fairy villa. When Liu Xi went to stay, the three holy mothers showed up to greet him and entertained her warmly. This way, the fairy and Yifan became a happy couple.
Today, people who visit Xiyue Temple can still see the lotus tube Liu Xi drew and the statues of the Three Holy Mothers.
The Xiyue Temple, under the Huashan Mountain, was first built during the reign of Emperor Wu of the Han Dynasty. After successive generations of repairs, the scale has become increasingly large and the building is extremely magnificent. It covers an area of ??186 acres and is surrounded by high walls. There are two temples inside and outside the wall. The brick building is still very strong after thousands of years of wind and rain. After passing the Jincheng Gate, you come to the Haoling Hall, the main building in the temple. The first impression you get from the main hall is the grandeur. It is the top of the Seven Intersection Mountains, located on a large platform, and its architectural style is also very harmonious with the surrounding scenery.
Around the main hall, there are many ancient cypresses and giant locust trees. Looking at them, they are lush and lush. There is a poem that goes, "The old cypresses are chilly, and the clear words are silent during the day. Open the door to the north of Huashan, and the mist sinks in the western evening." . It describes the solemn and quiet environment of Xiyue Temple.
