Qu Yuan and the Dragon Boat Festival

To commemorate the great patriotic poet Qu Yuan, our people celebrate the Dragon Boat Festival every year on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month. This custom later spread to North Korea, Japan, Myanmar, Vietnam, Malaysia and other countries.

Qu Yuan lived in the Warring States Period more than 2,300 years ago. When he was young, he had lofty ambitions and showed amazing talents. He gained the trust of King Huai of Chu and was promoted to "Zuo Tu". According to legend, Sima Qian's "Historical Records" records that he "discussed state affairs with the king" internally and "received guests and dealt with the princes" externally. He was the minister in charge of internal affairs and foreign affairs.

The Warring States Period was originally a chaotic period when Qi, Chu, Yan, Han, Zhao, Wei, and Qin were competing for hegemony. The Qin State became increasingly powerful after appointing Shang Yang to carry out reforms, and often launched attacks on the six kingdoms. At that time, only Chu and Qi could compete with them. In view of the situation at that time, Qu Yuan advocated reforming domestic affairs and externally advocating uniting Qi to resist Qin. This violated the interests of the upper ruling class and was criticized by Zheng Xiu, Shangguan officials, and Ling Yin Zijiao, who were bribed by Qin. Exclusion and frame-up.

The confused King Huai listened to the slander, alienated Qu Yuan, and exiled him to the north of Han Dynasty. As a result, King Huai of Chu was deceived by Qin and became a prisoner for three years, and died in a foreign country.

Qu Yuan was extremely angry when he saw all this. He resolutely opposed humiliating surrender to Qin, and was even more severely persecuted by his political opponents. The newly ascended King Xiang of Chu was more foolish than his father and exiled Qu Yuan to a more remote place than Hanbei.

During his long life in exile, Qu Yuan did not give in. He insisted on his political views and never followed the crowd. He picked up a pen to express his love for the motherland, criticized the "small group" for harming the country, and left an immortal poem for future generations.

Qu Yuan is the first greatest and most outstanding romantic poet in the history of Chinese literature. Later generations call his works "Chu Ci". His representative work is "Li Sao", which is the longest lyric poem in Qu Yuan's works, with 373 lines and 2,777 words. The poem describes the poet's efforts to implement his political ideas. The blows and persecution he suffered deeply expressed his inner pain and his unswerving feelings of loyalty to the people and the motherland.

It is conceivable that Qu Yuan suffered mental and life devastation and pain during his long exile. One day while he was walking along the riverside, he met a hermit who was fishing. Seeing that he looked haggard and withered, the hermit advised him to "not be rigid" and "be more easy-going" and join the ranks of the powerful. Qu Yuan said: "I would rather go to Hunan and be buried in the belly of a fish; how can I be so white and covered with the dust of the world?" (Meaning: I would rather jump into the river and be buried in the belly of a fish, how can I Let his pure character suffer the dust of the world?)

In 278 AD, the capital of the Chu State was captured by the Qin soldiers. The poet suffered a great spiritual blow. Seeing the difficulty of the country's destruction, he still Unable to exert his own strength, he was worried. In extreme disappointment and pain, the poet came to the Miluo River on the east side of the Yangtze River and bouldered himself. He was about sixty-two years old when he died, on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month.

Two thousand years have passed, which cannot be considered a short moment in the long river of history. However, although the river has gone eastward and the country has come and gone, the image of the poet Qu Yuan still remains in people's hearts.

Today, every Dragon Boat Festival, people still row dragon boats in the rivers and tie colorful silk threads on the rice dumplings to commemorate the great poet Qu Yuan. It can be seen that the poet's works and spirit will last forever!
