When Liu Bang and Xiang Yu were fighting for the world, Ji Bu and Ding Gong were both Xiang Yu's generals. Ji Bu led his troops to defeat Liu Bang several times, and Ding Gong also led his troops to pursue Liu Bang, but finally let him go. After Liu Bang became emperor, he resented Ji Bu for defeating him, so he had him arrested. But thinking that he also needed the help of a loyal minister like him, he no longer held grudges. Not only did he let him go, he was also made a doctor.
Ding Gong is Ji Bu's uncle. He heard that people like Ji Bu who had embarrassed Liu Bang could be released as officials, let alone someone like him who had been kind to Liu Bang. Unexpectedly, he was arrested by Liu Bang.
Liu Bang said to everyone: "Ding Gong was unfaithful when he was the general of Xiang Ji. It was people like him who made King Xiang lose the world." Liu Bang ordered Ding Gong to be executed and showed it to the public in the army. Warn everyone to be loyal ministers and not to imitate Ding Gong.
After the establishment of the Han Dynasty, Liu Bang governed the world with literature, recruited Confucian scholars, issued imperial edicts to the world, and extensively sought talents. In June of the same year after he ascended the throne, Liu Bang held a celebration banquet at Nangong in Luoyang. At the banquet, he summarized the reasons for his victory: In terms of strategizing and winning from thousands of miles away, I am not as good as Zhang Liang; in terms of appeasing the people and supplying food and grass, I am not as good as Zhang Liang. I am not as good as Xiao He; in terms of leading millions of troops, fighting decisively on the battlefield, and winning every battle, I am not as good as Han Xin.
However, I can know people well and make full use of their talents. This is the real reason for our victory. As for Xiang Yu, he only had Fan Zeng available, but he was suspicious of him. This was the reason for his final failure.
In 195 BC, during the crusade against Yingbo's rebellion, he was seriously injured. After formulating the "White Horse Alliance", he died in Chang'an. He was given the posthumous title of Emperor Gao and the temple name of Taizu, and was buried in Changling.
