Because this person created a master like Sun Wukong in just a few years, and then mysteriously disappeared, and no trace of it can be found in the book. Who he is has always been a mystery. There are many different opinions on the identity of Patriarch Bodhi on the Internet. Let me share my views.
First, the theory that "Bodhi is the quasi-enti, and the guide is the Tathagata" is not very credible
There is a popular version of "Bodhi is the quasi-dhi. "The Tathagata is the guide." I respect other people's opinions. It is certainly a good thing for a hundred schools of thought to contend. But when I posted in the past, many commenters held up their so-called "truth" and "standard answer" that "Bodhi is a quasi-teaching" and directly rejected my point of view without even reading my post. I think this is unfair. Everyone has their own arguments. Don't use your own "answer" to arbitrarily deny a new theory. This is unfair to the new theory. In fact, there are several obvious loopholes in that view. I will refute it first and then establish it. Let’s first talk about the shortcomings of the theory of “Bodhi is Zhunti”:
1. This view says that later Zhunti was dissatisfied with the dictatorship and lived in seclusion in Fangcun Mountain in anger. This is obviously related to YY. There are no foreshadowings or clues in the two books, so this is not enough evidence!
2. This view cannot explain the reasons why Randen, Manjusri and other five people abandoned Taoism and became Buddhists, nor can it explain why Randen, as a younger generation who was guided, became a superior to the Tathagata. Ancient Buddha.
3. Novelists must create characters out of their own will. Bodhi’s mysterious identity was given by Lao Wu, which means that Lao Wu knew Bodhi’s true identity in his heart. Only Lao Wu has the final say on Bodhi's identity. It's just a secret or foreshadowing in the novel. It's hard to explain clearly. There are many such secrets in The Red Mansion.
But as everyone knows, if the characters in novel A are to be verified as characters in novel B, novel B must be written before novel A, otherwise it is nonsense. If Conferring Gods was written before Journey to the West, then it is understandable that when Lao Wu created the character of Bodhi, he intentionally related him to Taoist Zhunti. But the fact is that Journey to the West was written before Conferred the Gods!
Think about it, everyone, when Lao Wu wrote Bodhi, he had no idea that Zhunti existed in the world. How could he bring these two people together? It can be seen that the Bodhi identity in Lao Wu's heart cannot be Zhunti, because he has no idea who Zhunti is. Novels written later can refer to novels written earlier to shape characters, but conversely, research cannot. For example, I am writing a novel now, and the description of a certain person in it uses the poem about Bodhi in Journey to the West. If my novel becomes popular, can you say, "The identity of Bodhi in Journey to the West is so-and-so in Ruixiang's novel." Poetry is proof. "If this is the case, it will be a mess, because it is impossible for Lao Wu to think of the characters I wrote when he wrote Bodhi. Therefore, considering the age of the book, Bodhi cannot be Zhunti, because Bodhi was established by Lao Wu and could not be changed by Lao Xu.
4. There are dozens of poems about people and scenery in Fengshen that are copied from Journey to the West. I read the poem quoted from Tathagata carefully and it made me dumbfounded. The first line of the poem about Tathagata in Journey to the West is "The Immortal's Barefoot Jujube and Pear Fragrance". The situation at that time was that Tathagata captured Wukong, and there was an Tiantian Conference in the sky. Many gods offered fruits to Tathagata, and the Barefoot Immortal offered two immortals to Tathagata. Jujube, and then there is the poem. It is obvious that the first sentence is about the Barefoot Immortal, not the Tathagata. However, Lao Xu only changed the seven-level lotus platform in the poem to the twelve-level lotus platform, thinking that he could get away with it, and even wrote the line "Barefoot Immortal" to directly introduce it. It is really ridiculous.
It can be seen that the poems in Fengshen are obviously directly plagiarized from Journey to the West, no matter the scenery or people, some of them are not even modified, causing a big joke. It can be seen that Lao Xu did not intentionally connect Zhunti and Bodhi, Jieyin and Tathagata, but simply copied the poem directly. What's more, he is not qualified to give Bodhi an identity. After all, this is a character created by others.
Other landscape poems such as Fire Cloud Cave, Kunlun Mountain, and Beihai in Fengshen are obviously plagiarized from Wudang Mountain, Fangcun Mountain, etc. in Journey to the West. Poems written about people such as Zhunti in Fengshen, Kong Xuan copied the Golden Summit Immortal and Tang Monk in Journey to the West.
If we can only determine the identity of Bodhi and Tathagata, is Kong Xuan the Tang Monk?
From the above, it can be seen that the credibility of the theory that "Bodhi is quasi-dhi, Tathagata is guidance" is not high.
Second, Patriarch Bodhi should be the incarnation of a certain master
Some friends will ask whether Patriarch Bodhi is a real person outside the world. Where is the master? I personally don’t think so. He should be the phantom of an expert. The reasons are as follows:
1. Bodhi is so powerful, but no one in the sky knows it, not even among mythical figures. There is no existence.
2. Bodhi is proficient in hundreds of schools of thought and understands Confucianism, Taoism and Buddhism. How can a person with such ability in Taoism and Buddhism remain unknown?
3. The power of Sun Wukong is something that can only be met but not sought. If Bodhi was a real and extraordinary person, he could not have predicted that the monkey would come to him. But he still teaches disciples and preaches in Fangcun Mountain. Judging from his ability to teach Wukong, his ability should be very high, but he has taught so many students, but they are all useless. Even if they don't reach the realm of Wukong, they should still have some reputation. Why are they unknown? What is Bodhi busy with? The appearance of Wukong reflects his value. So what if Wukong doesn't show up? Is he so capable that he just runs a school in the human world and cultivates garbage? It can be seen that Bodhi does not actually exist, but is an illusion by someone. He foresaw the place where Wukong was going, so he transformed into Bodhi there. It didn't matter that his disciples were rubbish. Maybe they were all conjured by him, and they were all temporary. of.
4. Bodhi does not allow Wukong to tell his master’s inheritance precisely because there is no person named Bodhi in heaven and earth. If Wukong said in heaven that his master is Bodhi, the gods in heaven will After a search, there was no such person. After investigation, he would definitely be able to find out who was the incarnation of Bodhi and taught Wukong his skills, so he asked Wukong not to reveal his inheritance.
5. What Bodhi teaches are all techniques from the Taoist sect, such as asking immortals to ask for divination, collecting yin and replenishing yang, etc., all of which are from the Taoist sect. Wukong originally sought immortality and visited Taoism, so it can be seen that Bodhisattva's disciples should be Taoist priests. But Lao Wu used Buddhist techniques when he wrote Bodhisattva poems. Isn’t this strange? If he is a real person, the Tao is the Tao, the monk is the monk, why should it be like this? It can be seen that it must be an illusion.
From the above, it can be seen that Bodhi is not a real master, but an illusion of immortals and Buddhas. And the above has overturned the saying that "Bodhi is a quasi-Bodhi", then Bodhi Who is it? Let me share my opinion.
3. Conjecture about the identity of Patriarch Bodhi
I have explained above that to analyze the identity of Patriarch Bodhi, the answer can only be found in Journey to the West. It is unscientific to look for it among the gods. However, the original cast members with the same names and surnames in the two books can learn from the two books Fengshen and Journey to the West, which is not a contradiction. To clarify, I am only researching from the perspective of pure fiction and mythology, and do not involve any history or Taoist or Buddhist classics, so as not to cause trouble, please pay attention to it, friends.
During Journey to the West, the Tathagata once said that the Supreme Truth is in Xiniu Hezhou, and Bodhi happened to be in Xiniu Hezhou. Tathagata had great power. He once said that he could recognize things and things in the world. How could Bodhi hide it from the Tathagata? Where is Dharma Eye? There are only two possibilities. One is that Bodhi is temporarily staying in Xiniu Hezhou and is here only to teach Sun Wukong. The other is that Bodhi's magical power is equal to or even exceeds that of Tathagata.
Let’s look at the introduction of Patriarch Bodhi when he appeared,
“The Great Enlightenment Golden Immortal without stains, the Patriarch of Western Wonderful Dharma Bodhi;
The three elements of no birth and death, the whole spirit and the infinite kindness.
The emptiness will naturally change, and the true nature will let you do it;
He lives the same life as heaven and has a solemn body, the Great Master Mingxin who has endured many calamities.
”
This poem was written by Lao Wu, and it obviously describes a Buddhist figure, but Wukong is seeking immortals and visiting Taoism, and Wukong later mentioned himself many times. Abandoning Taoism and following Buddhism, we can judge that Bodhi's disciples should have been dressed as Taoists at that time. Although Bodhi taught things that included Confucianism, Buddhism and Taoism, most of them were Taoism and "the ancestor of the West" in the poem, "live as long as heaven". His reputation is also very high. Who can live as long as God and be the ancestor of the West? The answer is Lao Tzu, who is also Taishang Laojun. You will be surprised when you see this. Come on, everyone knows that Lao Tzu is the ancestor of Taoism, so why is he the ancestor of the West?
Four, starting from Lao Tzu’s nonsense
Although, There are many people who deny this on the Internet, but they all refute it from history or Buddhist and Taoist classics. Let me talk about books and only talk about two novels. In Fengshen Yanyi, there are three poems when Laozi appears.
"In the Xuanhuang era, I worship the Master, and in the chaotic time, I am allowed to do it;
The five elements are in my control, and the great road leads to the group of sages.
It is pure and built into a golden pagoda, and it has been out of Kansai for leisurely travels;
Its two hands embrace the outer world, and its belly is safe with the Five Mountains and Xumiru. "
"At the beginning of Hunyuan, I judged the Tao as before, always there is always nothing natural;
Purple air comes from the east for thirty thousand miles, and it first passes through Wuhan Pass. millennium. ”
“When Hanguan first came out of Kunlun, he unified the Taoist sect of Huayi;
My body is the same as that of heaven and earth, but the inverted nature of Mount Xumi still exists. ”
It is clearly stated here that “I have crossed over to the sages”, which shows that Lao Tzu taught many disciples and preached many things. It is also said that “I once left Guanxi” and “I visited Guanxi for the first time”, which shows that Laozi once went outside Hangu Pass. He also said that he "unified Huayi". It can be seen that Laozi did go west to Huayi. Everyone should know that "Five Mountains", "Kunlun" refers to China, Taoism, and "Xumi" refers to Huayi and Buddhism. Brand number.
Looking at Journey to the West, when Laojun and Guanyin watched Erlang fight against Wukong, Laojun once introduced the Vajra to Guanyin and said, "This weapon is a Kun Steel Tube. The refined one is made by my Jianghuan Dan, and cultivates a spiritual energy. It can change, is invulnerable to water and fire, and can trap all things; it is called 'Jingangzhuo', also known as 'Golden Steel Set'. When he passed Hanguan, he transformed Hu into a Buddha, which was a great debt to him. "Please pay attention to the importance of this sentence! At that time, Laojun was speaking to a Buddhist dignitary like Guanyin Bodhisattva. Since he said "turn a tiger into a Buddha" and Guanyin had no objection, it can be seen that this is indeed a fact. Taishang Laojun is indeed As the ancestor of the West, he is also the ancestor of Taoism. This is consistent with the poem of Bodhi. This is the argument that Taishang Laozi is the ancestor of Bodhi.
Fifth, the relationship between Laozi and Western religion
Everyone knows that in the Legend of the Gods, during the Zhuxian Formation and the Ten Thousand Immortals Formation, there were two leaders of the Western Sect who introduced the Taoist priest and the Taoist Zhunti, and what their identities were. What kind of religion is Western Buddhism? Judging from the descriptions of this religion in later stories and books, this is undoubtedly Buddhism in Journey to the West.
From the above, we know that Lao Tzu once He went out of Hangu to transform Hu into a Buddha. It can be seen that before becoming a god, Laozi had already transformed into a Buddhist. Since Western Buddhism was later established, it can be seen that the people Laozi transformed were the Western followers such as Jingyin Zhunti. At the beginning of the Yuan Dynasty, there were many followers in the Tongtian sect, but the only one in the Laozi sect was Master Xuandu, and he also said that he "transferred into the group of sages", which shows that the Western religion is actually the religion initiated by Laozi, but in the canonization of gods, Zhunti was introduced. I don't know Lao Tzu, so it can be seen that when enlightening Western religions, Lao Tzu also performed it through incarnations like he taught Sun Wukong.
A very important clue is that the names of the official positions in the list of gods are written down. Only the three leaders Laozi, Yuanshi, and Tongtian know this. Second-generation disciples such as Ran Deng, Zhao Gongming and others do not know the names in the list of gods. Zhunti has rescued people from the Jie Cult many times and said that his name is not on the list of gods. As a Western leader, how can he know the secret of the list of gods in the sect? I think this should have been secretly told by Taishang Laojun, because it was he who inspired and established Western religion!
Six, the master-disciple relationship between Laojun and Sun Wukong
Since we think that the Bodhi Patriarch is the Supreme Laojun, let’s take a look at Laojun The master-disciple relationship with Goku.
1. The original text of Journey to the West once said: "At the beginning of the world, there was an ancestor who resolved the name of Nuwa, refined stones to mend the sky, and saved the world of Jambu. "It can be seen that only Laojun knows the identity of Wukong's spirit stone and can predict that he will come to seek immortality and visit Taoism. This establishes the master-disciple relationship with Wukong. How do others such as Zhunti know it?
2. When Wukong asked for weapons in the East China Sea, the original text of Journey to the West, Long Po said to the Dragon King, "Your Majesty, it is not trivial to see this saint. In our sea treasure, which piece The sacred iron at the bottom of the Tianhe River has been glowing brightly and auspiciously these past few days. Isn't it supposed to appear? "Everyone knows that magic weapons are formed by the infusion of certain thoughts and magic power by immortals. Its aura is injected and influenced by the maker. The abnormality of the Dinghai Divine Needle when it saw Wukong should be caused by its maker. So who is the owner of the Dinghai Divine Needle? The original text of Journey to the West "The stick is made of nine-turn iron, and Laojun forged it in the furnace with his own hands. King Yu asked for the name Shenzhen, and the four seas and eight rivers were the final test." It can be seen that the Dinghai Shenzhen was refined by Laojun, so it should have the title of Laojun. Spiritual energy and thinking, in other words, Laojun can control and manipulate it. From Long Po’s words, we know that Dinghai Shenzhen began to change, and seemed to be destined to Wukong. Isn’t this Laojun manipulating it behind the scenes? It can be seen that the stick was given to Wukong by Laojun secretly.
3. Wukong seemed invincible when he caused trouble in the Heavenly Palace. In fact, we know from the subsequent stories that many masters in the heavens such as Yuanshi Tianzun and Zhenwu Emperor did not take action at all at that time. Ordinary generals, such as Kui Mulang, don't try their best. This is very strange. Later, Wukong was unable to defeat Qing Niu and went to heaven to investigate the people. The Jade Emperor wanted to send generals to help him. Wukong once said that those people could not defeat Qing Niu when they had not even beaten him. At that time, Heavenly Master Xu Jingyang said: "At this moment, there will be no chance of defeating the Qing Niu." For a moment, it was very different." It can be seen that the gods in the sky deliberately released the water at that time. As for the reason, it is still possible that they already knew the identity of Master Wukong.
4. Wukong later fought against the Erlang God Yang Jian. When Guanyin told Laojun that her bottle might kill Wukong and was about to take action, Laojun hurriedly stopped him. Stopping, Laojun uses his bracelet to "save" Wukong's life. Laojun's reason at that time was also very funny. He was worried that the bottle of Guanyin Bodhisattva was made of porcelain and might be broken. Is this possible?
5. Then the old king took the initiative to burn Wukong. After the monkey was caught, he was tied up with a rope, so that the hook knife penetrated the pipa bone and could no longer change. In this way, the monkey could not Cast spells to save yourself. When Laojun was training the monkey, he used a tool that could penetrate the pipa bone. Why should he remove it? Wouldn't it be safer to practice it with the hook and the person together? Doesn't Laojun know that if the immortal criminal's pipa bone is hooked, he will be slaughtered by others? If it is left, trouble may arise, so let him escape. So why is Laojun going at this time? The only explanation is not to let him die and let him save his own life. Then it can be seen that Laojun does not want to kill him to make elixir. In fact, he was secretly taught the art of having a bronze head and an iron back, and blazing eyes and golden eyes. Just imagine if Laojun wanted to kill him deliberately, why would he bother so much. This can be known from Wukong’s later words, “When he made a big fuss in the Heavenly Palace, he was put by Laojun in the Eight Sealing Furnace and forged. Fortunately, he settled in the Xun position and was not burned out. It was just that the wind stirred up the smoke. "He always said that he was trained by Lao Jun and was grateful. This shows that Wukong understands that Lao Jun has no intention of killing him. Even if Wukong does not know that Lao Jun is his mentor, Patriarch Bodhi, he also understands that Lao Jun has no intention of killing him. Jun is helping him. Just imagine that Red Boy's fire can almost kill Wukong, let alone Laojun. No one would think that Daozu is no match for a little kid. Besides, there are many ways to kill him, just close his gourd and then close the lid, and Wukong will die.
6. Then read the following text. When collecting the gold and silver horns, after Laojun appeared, the original text described "Wukong rushed forward in a panic to salute." Imagine a person who has killed you, would you do the same? It was too late to be angry and despised, how could he be so humble, let alone Wukong who has always been arrogant and arrogant. It can be seen that Wukong understood that the old man was doing it for his own good. Sun Wukong has understood human feelings since he was trapped for five hundred years. He is respectful to Tang Monk, firstly out of the kindness of saving his life, and secondly because he is the person chosen by Tathagata, so of course he has to respect him. He respected Tathagata because Tathagata was too powerful. Wukong knew his name and was already convinced. It would be useless for him to fight against him, so of course he followed the rules. The same is true for Guanyin. Guanyin has greater magic power than Wukong. Wukong knows this, and Guanyin can read the tight hoop. Wukong is also afraid of this. As for Laojun, the book does not mention how powerful he is, nor is it clearly mentioned that he subdued Wukong, and even the furnace was broken by Wukong. If Wukong is really ignorant and sees that Laojun is just like this and he is defeated, why should he be respectful to him?
7. Let’s look at the following text. When we arrived at the Wuji Kingdom, Wukong asked Laojun for elixirs to save a mortal. If Laojun is not the ancestor of the West, not Wukong's master, a person who has nothing to do with himself and works for Buddhism, why did Laojun, as the Taoist ancestor, give him the precious Nine Turns Resurrection Pill? Wukong had already said that he would seek medicine elsewhere, so Laojun stopped him and gave him one. The reason was that he was afraid that he would steal it, so it was better to give him one as a favor. Just imagine, if Laojun really refuses to give it and carries that gourd with him, how can Wukong steal it. One day in the sky, one year on the earth, it takes him a few hours. If Laojun is not in a hurry, Wukong will be in a hurry, so Laojun must be sincere in giving the medicine. This shows Laojun's love for Sun Wukong.
Seven, the relationship between Laozi and several mysterious figures
Since the previous article has demonstrated the fact that Laozi transformed Hu into a Buddha and became the master of Sun Wukong, the following Uncover the identities of several mysterious characters. The Western religion in Fengshen is the religion founded by Laozi, which is the Buddhism in Journey to the West. According to the "Infinite Life Sutra", the so-called Amitabha Buddha is the leader of the Western Paradise. He can guide people who chant the Buddha's name to be reborn in the West. Therefore, it is also called the Receiving Buddha. . When Lao Xu wrote about conferring gods, he wrote about Western religion, whose leader was a Taoist priest. People who believe that "Bodhi is quasi-dhi and Tathagata is jieyin" have ever considered this question: If Tathagata is jieyin, why did Lao Xu call himself Taoist Jieyin? He should be named Taoist Tathagata, or something similar. Even if he can't have a name like Taoist Tathagata, he shouldn't be named Taoist Jieyin. This will obviously cause misunderstandings among readers and researchers, and Lao Xu would not do this. Since he was named Taoist Jie Yin, it must be related to Jie Yin Buddha.
The Western leader’s introduction to the Taoist corresponds to the Western leader’s introduction to the Buddha (i.e. Amitabha) in the Paradise of Paradise. This should be neat and more convincing. Buddhism is divided into three major worlds. The Western Paradise is revered by Amitabha Buddha, who guides Taoists. In the Oriental Jingliuli world, Medicine Buddha is revered. Looking at the gods, Zhuntijian is related to the East. In addition to his status as the second leader of the Western Sect, it is reasonable for him to be revered in the Eastern Buddhist world. The central Saha world is revered by Sakyamuni, the Tathagata Buddha on his journey to the west. Who is Tathagata Buddha?
Anyone who has read "Feng Shen" knows that the reason why Zhunti was invited to participate in the Battle of "Feng Shen" was to recruit people with destiny from the West. The book clearly stated that they accepted many people such as Kong Xuan and others. people. But there was one person they did not take away, that is Taoist Duobao. Before picking up Zhunti in the future, I had already captured Duobao and sent it to Xuandu. Jieyin Zhunti arrived later. They did not know Duobao, and the book did not mention that they took Duobao away. It can be seen that Taoist Duobao did not follow Zhunti to the West. However, it is clearly written in the book that after many treasures, he became a Buddhist and became a Buddha, which shows that it was arranged by Lao Jun. There is a poem in the original book when Guangcheng fought against Duobao, "One is Guangcheng Immortal Body, and the other is Duobao worshiping Sakyamuni in the west." The word "worship" is explained as "as, called, conferred an official", such as official worship General and others. It can be guessed that Taoist Duobao was the later Sakyamuni, the Tathagata Buddha. Since there is a saying about the Tathagata Many Treasures, it can be seen that Many Treasures was selected by Laojun and arranged to be the ruler of the central Buddhist world. But this is a high-level secret, and Kong Xuan does not know it. When he saw that the junior newcomer Duobao was the same as the two old leaders, he felt unhappy and wanted to stand up for his master. So the incident of swallowing the Buddha mentioned by Tathagata in Journey to the West took place.
After the Tathagata came out of the peacock's belly, he originally wanted to kill him, but the Buddhas interceded for mercy. They also considered that he was a quasi-predecessor, and he had to look at the owner to kill the peacock, so they devised a plan to save face and sealed the Peacock Great Ming King Bodhisattva. Everyone was very happy. . And it calmed people's hearts and earned enough popularity. So no one objected anymore.
Now that it has been demonstrated that Laojun turned Hu into a Buddha and founded Western religion, and that many treasures are the Tathagata, it can be explained why Randen, Manjusri, and Samantabhadra among the gods, Cihang was afraid that Liu Sun and other Taoist people would change to Buddhism. And this also explains the reason why Ran Deng is an ancient Buddha. Randeng is half a generation after Lao Tzu and half a generation after Gao Manjusri. Therefore, after Duobao ascends the throne, it is natural for Randeng to become an ancient Buddha. It seems that Manjusri and others became Buddhists under the influence and arrangement of Laozi.
Eight, why did Laozi let Sun Wukong learn the scriptures
After Laozi enlightened and established Western religion, he retired from the army, ruled by doing nothing, and did not care about worldly affairs. . Later he found a spiritual stone, which was Wukong. It was mentioned in Journey to the West that "Laojun dissolved Nuwa and refined stones to mend the sky." And because Wukong was the remaining spiritual stone from Nuwa's mending of the sky, Laojun knew that Wukong's origin was transformed by the spiritual energy of heaven and earth. The old man was so happy that he went to the mortal world to teach Wukong, and secretly gave Wukong the golden cudgel that he had made and given to Dayu. Although Wukong's abilities were high, he never became a real person. He was just a loose immortal. Although he later became the Monkey King, he caused trouble in the Heavenly Palace and could no longer stay in the Heavenly Palace. Laojun therefore asked him to participate in Buddhist scriptures and enter Buddhism.
Speaking of this matter, we have to mention an important figure who cooperated with Laojun in arranging this matter, that is, the Randen Taoist in the Conferred Gods, who later became a Buddhist and became a Buddha, and traveled to the West. The lamp-burning ancient Buddha in. This person is only mentioned twice in Journey to the West, once at the beginning and once at the end of the book. When Wukong entered the Tusita Palace by mistake, the book clearly stated that Laojun was outside discussing important matters with the ancient Buddha of Ran Deng. We can guess that Ran Deng told Laojun that the Tathagata will preach the scriptures in China, and those who learn the scriptures will achieve enlightenment after success. Lao Jun recommended his beloved disciple Sun Wukong to Ran Deng. The second mention of Ran Deng is at the end of the book, when he sends people to help Wukong and the others discover the wordless scripture.
There are two obvious evidences. First, there are many Buddhas and Bodhisattvas in Buddhism, but those in the book who are related to sutras are Guanyin, Manjusri, Samantabhadra and others. This is obviously arranged by Lao Jun deliberately. They are all Lao Jun's nephews and acquaintances.
