1. Origin of the surname:
Single origin: from The Jurchen tribe originated from Chao Wu, a general of the Nipangu tribe in the Jin Dynasty during the Song and Jin Dynasties.
According to the historical record "History of the Jin Dynasty": "There was Chaowu in the Jin Dynasty, and he was named Meng'an (chief of thousands of households)." His descendants took the homophonic Chinese character of their father's name "Chaowu" as their surname, and called him Chaowu. Shi, later simplified to Chao.
According to the historical record "Tongpu of Wanxing": During the Ming Dynasty, there were Juren Chaoxiu, Chaoqi and Chaojie, all of whom were from Zhangde (now Anyang, Henan).
The ancestor of the surname: Nipangu Chaowu.
Nipangu Chaowu was a general of the Jin Kingdom of the Jurchen tribe. He was brave and good at fighting, and was good at monitoring the enemy's situation. Therefore, he won many battles with the Southern Song Dynasty army. Later, he offended Wanyan Sijing, an important minister of the Jin Kingdom Pingzhang Zhengshi (Prime Minister). In addition, he abused his power for personal gain and made money by smuggling horses. Wanyan Sijing sent someone to escort him to Beijing to discuss the crime. Nipangu Chaowu was unwilling to be humiliated by Wanyan Sijing and committed suicide on the way. The descendants of Nipangu Chaowu commemorated the achievements of their ancestors and took their first name "Chaowu" as their surname.
