Historical evolution of Moscow Zoo:

Moscow Zoo has gradually developed from a small-scale zoo into a large park with scientific, educational and animal species preservation capabilities. The Moscow Zoo, a conservation institution, was established in the mid-16th century to collect all plants and animals discovered by the Russian Imperial Society and opened to visitors on February 13, 1864.

Professor Anatoly P.Bogdanov of Moscow State University is one of the founders and organizers of the zoo. As Professor Bogdanov said: because this is the first time to try this kind of outdoor biological museum-based scientific institution. Therefore, the establishment of the zoo is very important to the cultural life of Moscow. Furthermore, as it is located in the center of Russia, its purpose is to accumulate unique practical experience for other zoos operating in rather harsh climatic conditions.
