Zhangjiagang City
At the end of Shang Dynasty, it belonged to the land of Wu. During the Spring and Autumn Period, it belonged to Yanling of the State of Wu. In the Qin Dynasty, it belonged to Kuaiji County.
In the Jin Dynasty, Jiyang County was established under Jiangyin County, and the county seat was Yangshe Town. During the Liang Dynasty, Liangfeng County was built in the ruins of Jiyang.
After the Tang Dynasty, it belonged to Jiangyin County. During the Tang and Song Dynasties, there was a gorge between Xiangshan and Zhenshan, with continuous water and gurgling streams all year round.
In case of heavy rain, flash floods rush directly into the sand of Dongjiang Bay where the canal is located, forming a channel. This canal later became the famous "Zhangjiagang" both at home and abroad.
According to the "Reconstruction of the Genealogy of the Zhang Family (Xiaoyoutang)" collected by Zhang Xingsheng in Group 6 of Nansha Zhenshan Village, in the first year of Wanli in the Ming Dynasty (1573), Zhang Nanshan lived at the northern foot of Xiangshan Mountain from the Jingjiang Ancestral Hall. , this is the ancestor of the Xiangshan branch of the Zhang family. Nanshangong used money to buy coupons here and developed the polder, and the village Zhangjiadai was formed next to the canal.
Since the developed polder fields were often flooded by flash floods, in the 24th year of Wanli (1596), the Zhang family gathered together and their descendants worked together to widen the canal into a river. The new river is 3 feet wide at the surface, 1 feet wide at the bottom, and more than 300 meters long. This avoids the suffering of waterlogging, but it does not have a name. In the 41st year of Wanli (1613), Zhang prepared three wooden boats of his own to trade grain and rice, and traveled between Yangzhou and Gaoyou. After several years, he made a lot of profits. In order to allow the wooden boats to dock in front of their house, they raised funds and workers to widen the river, and built an inverted pond at the end of the river next to the house so that the wooden boats could turn around. At this time, the river is 7 feet wide at the surface and 3 feet wide at the bottom. Heavy-loaded wooden boats can move in and out freely. It has become a big river, but it still has no name.
In the second year of Kangxi in the Qing Dynasty (1663), Jiangyin County Government planned to build a road between Chengjiangmen and Wushan. When surveying and measuring the river, it was found that the river was unknown, so it asked Dong Wuyi of Daqiao Town to Suggest a name. Wu Yizhi knew that the river was opened by Zhang's ancestors, and later by Zhang's grandson Tuokuan, so he named it "Zhangjiagang" and reported it to Jiangyin County Government for recognition and filing. In the winter of the third year of Kangxi's reign (1664), the Jiangyin County Government officially approved the naming of this river as Zhangjiagang.
Due to the rapid accumulation of sandbars in the Yangtze River, during the Xianfeng period of the Qing Dynasty (1851-1861), large sandbars were connected to the ancient land of Jiangnan. From the 13th year of Tongzhi in the Qing Dynasty (1874) to the Republic of China, about 10 square kilometers of sandy land north of Changtong Port was allocated to Tongzhou. During the Anti-Japanese War, the Communist Party of China once established Shazhou County in the northern area along the river, and Yuxi County in the southern area and the border area between Changshu and Jiangyin counties (the county is now governed by Miaoqiao Office, Tangqiao Town, Zhangjiagang City).
On April 22, 1949, the entire Shazhou was liberated. Following the organizational system of the Republic of China, the east part belongs to Changshu County, the west part belongs to Jiangyin County, and the north of Changtong Port belongs to Changshu County.
On November 29, 1957, the State Council approved the establishment of Shazhou County, taking part of the administrative areas of Jiangyin and Changshu counties as its administrative areas. Shazhou County was officially established in 1962. Affiliated to Suzhou District, Jiangsu Province.
In 1958, the Jiangyin County People's Government organized 60,000 migrant workers and a thousand People's Liberation Army officers and soldiers to dredge Zhangjiagang. The total length of the river is 38.11 kilometers. In 1968, the Shazhou County People's Government carried out dredging again, and Zhangjiagang became a Class 6 inland waterway. In 1970, Suzhou Prefecture was changed to Suzhou Area, and Shazhou County belonged to Suzhou Area. In 1982, Zhangjiagang Port was officially opened to the outside world.
In March 1983, the Suzhou Regional Administrative Commissioner's Office was abolished and a city-governed county system was implemented in Suzhou City. Shazhou County was subordinate to Suzhou City.
On September 16, 1986, the State Council approved the abolition of Shazhou County and the establishment of county-level Zhangjiagang City, under the jurisdiction of Suzhou City. The Municipal People's Government is located in Yangshe Town.
