From "Yan Zi Chun Qiu·Za Xia No. 10"
"Oranges crossing the Huai River become Zhi"
Yan Zi was about to arrive in Chu. When Chu heard about it, he said to his left and right: "Yan Ying is a good communicator in Qi. Now he is here. I want to humiliate him. Why?" The people on the left and right said to each other: "Because he has come, I asked you to tie up a person and pass the king. The king said: "What is this? "Yes?" He said, "Qi people." The king said, "Where are you sitting?" When Yan Zi arrived, the king of Chu gave Yan Zi wine, and the two officials tied one man to the king. "Who is the one who binds?" He said to him, "I am a man of Qi who is a robber." The king looked at Yanzi and said, "Are the people of Qi good at stealing?" Yanzi avoided the table and said to him, "I heard it, and the orange grows in Huainan. It is orange when grown in Huaibei, and its leaves are similar, but its taste is different. Why is it so different? The people today do not steal when they grow up in Qi, but they do not steal when they come to Chu. The king laughed and said: "The sage is not worthy of Xi, and the humble man is sick."
Yan Zi was about to go on a mission to Chu. After the King of Chu heard the news, he said to the people around him: "Yan Ying He is a man who is good at rhetoric in Qi. Now that he is coming, I want to humiliate him. What should I do?" The people around him replied, "When he comes, please let me tie up a person and pass him in front of you. "What does this man do?" I replied, "He is from Qi State." You asked, "What crime did he commit?" I replied, "He committed the crime of stealing." Yanzi was given wine to drink. When he was having a good time, two officials tied up a man and came to the King of Chu. The King of Chu asked, "What does the tied man do?" The officials replied, "He is from Qi State. He is a criminal. The king of Chu looked at Yan Zi and said, "Are the people of Qi good at stealing?" Yan Zi left his seat and replied seriously: "I have heard that orange trees grow south of the Huaihe River. The trees north of the Huaihe River have similar leaves, but their fruits have different tastes. Why? It’s because the soil and water are different. People don’t steal when they grow up in Qi, but they steal when they enter Chu. The water and soil of Chu State make people good at stealing!" The king of Chu said with a smile: "A sage cannot joke with him."
