"Tun" originated from the ancient people's "farming" and was organized by the government and the army. The government organizes "civilian camps" and the army organizes "military camps". These settlements, which used to have wasteland population, were later named after "a certain village", which is also a common name in the northern region, mostly from military villages in the Ming Dynasty.
"Zhai" is a common settlement in mountainous areas, especially in southern minority mountainous areas. Because most of these cottages have defensive measures, walled villages are similar to the "camping" of ancient troops, so they are often named after "villages".
The word itself has the meaning of village, but the word "Zhuang" itself refers to more. The mansion where the big landlords lived in ancient times will also be called "so-and-so village", and Chai Jin's home in the Water Margin is the village. These farms often have defensive functions, which are different from ordinary farms. In addition, in martial arts novels, some heroes' homes are also named after "Zhuang", such as "Juxian Zhuang" (Dragon Eight Branches). In Romance of the Three Kingdoms, the place where Zhuge Liang studied was also called "Water Mirror Villa". The Jehol Palace of the Qing emperor was also named "Summer Resort". It can be seen that although Zhuang is very ordinary, it is a somewhat ambiguous word. Therefore, we now call the countryside "a village" in order to accurately refer to it.
