Zhu Yuanzhang followed Zhao Kuangyin, Taizu of the Song Dynasty, in assigning names to his descendants. He specified the name format as: surname + generation + first name. He also stipulated that the names must use "the radicals of the five elements", that is, gold, wood, Water, fire, and earth are the radical characters, and the order of "wood, fire, earth, metal, and water" is the order of the five elements.
Zhu Yuanzhang had 26 sons, and each son’s name had the character “木” next to it. He set a seniority list for each son, each with 20 characters, starting from his grandson. Name it.
Zhu Yuanzhang's naming method follows the principle of "the five elements coexist" in traditional culture. For example, it is said in "The Meaning of the Five Elements in the Spring and Autumn Period": "Wood produces fire, fire produces earth, earth produces metal, metal produces water, water produces wood, this is father and son." Zhu Yuanzhang hoped that future generations would be like the five elements of heaven, which are endless and prosperous. Guo Zuo can last for thousands of generations.
