Naming rules of lithostratigraphic units

It is generally stipulated that the naming of lithostratigraphic units should follow the general provisions of this guide on the naming of stratigraphic units (see 8.4). In addition, there are the following supplementary provisions: the name of lithostratigraphic unit should be composed of an appropriate local geographical name (proper name) and a unit term (group, group, section and layer) indicating its level, or a simple rock name representing the main rock types of the unit (such as Taiyuan Formation, Huoshan Sandstone, Fujiagou Gneiss and Xikang Slate), or a combination of the three (such as Rudong) The first letter of all words that constitute the official name of lithostratigraphic units should be capitalized. In order to facilitate foreign exchange, English is used instead of Chinese pinyin for unit terms, such as Changxing limestone instead of Changxing limestone; ; Wu Tong Group is used for Wu Tong Group, not for Qnu in Wu Tong.

Descriptive adjectives, such as "soft", "hard" and "breccia", should not be used in rock terminology of lithostratigraphic unit names.

In principle, adjectives such as eruption and metamorphism should not be used in the names of lithostratigraphic units. But they can be used when they help to clarify the nature of a unit or provide valuable information, such as metamorphic complexes and volcanic complexes.

Adjectives "upper", "middle" and "lower" should not be used in the division of official lithostratigraphic units. If used, it should be regarded as an informal lithostratigraphic unit. Article 8.4. 1 covers the use of place names for stratigraphic units. For some special lithostratigraphic units, the supplementary provisions are as follows:

When a lithostratigraphic unit changes laterally in lithology, or because of sedimentation, metamorphism or diagenesis, whether it is necessary to change its place name depends on the degree of change, the durability (or stability) after change, and the reliability of comparison and continuity. For regional changes, we can consider changing the name, but this change should be cautious, so as to avoid confusion caused by proposing to establish a new name of lithostratigraphic unit according to some minor lithologic changes, especially when the boundary of lithologic changes is not obvious, it is best to use a generalized name instead of two or more names.

A simple lithostratigraphic unit name consisting of geographical proper names and rock names is only used for group-level units, such as Huoshan sandstone, and its level is equivalent to group. Rock terms can also be used for segment names or layer names. However, be sure to add another unit-level item-segment or layer-after the rock item. Generally speaking, the name of rock is not used to represent a group.

As a non-layered metamorphic rock body with undetermined origin, the lithostratigraphic unit name should consist of an appropriate geographical proper name and a unit term representing a group, or a simple field rock name representing the main rock types.

In offshore drilling in many areas, there is a problem of choosing a formal geographical name for the lithostratigraphic units in the well. In some cases, the lithostratigraphic units under drilling can't be compared with the large-scale surface lithostratigraphic units, and it is difficult to find a suitable place name for the new strata. At this time, we can take a name from the coast, ocean or other features. Even so, such naming is rare, so it is often necessary to label lithostratigraphic units by purely artificial naming in offshore drilling. This provision also applies to lithostratigraphic units determined by underwater surveying and mapping. In the name of a lithostratigraphic unit, when using the rock term, this term should be the simplest and easy to accept, and can represent the name of the main features of the unit, such as limestone, sandstone, shale, rhyolite, quartzite, gneiss, complex and conglomerate. Compound terms such as "clay shale" or "sandy limestone" and synthetic terms such as "shale and sandstone" are not suitable for rock terms in rock unit names. Nor should adjectives be used between place names and rock terms, such as so-and-so black shale.

Genetic terms and structural lithofacies terms, such as moraine, tempestite, flysch and slump rock, should be avoided as official names of lithostratigraphic units. Because such terms and treatment methods violate the principle of multiple falsity in research, and the practice of adopting genetic restriction affects the credibility of the concept of unit itself, it is easy to cause unnecessary controversy.
