/kloc-0 was converted into a multi-purpose aircraft carrier on June 30, 975. Overhaul at Philadelphia Naval Shipyard from July 1990 to March 3 1993.

It was originally planned to replace the Independence deployed in Japan with 1998, but it was found that its position was worse than that of Kitty Hawk. It is planned to retire in 2003 and be replaced by CVN76.
