The United States is a country composed of immigrants, and at the same time, the United States is also a country ruled by law. China's current immigration laws need to be completely revised. At the welcoming ceremony on Monday, I will explain my views on the comprehensive reform of the immigration law, which will help promote border security, strengthen the enforcement of the law and safeguard our beliefs from infringement.
Comprehensive reform will begin with strengthening border security. Since I took office, our budget for border security has increased by 66%; The Department of Homeland Security has arrested and repatriated nearly 6 million illegal immigrants. In order to strengthen border security, we will increase the number of border patrol personnel by thousands, and will use advanced technical means to assist them in their work, such as infrared cameras and high-altitude unmanned reconnaissance aircraft. In addition, we will set up a barrier similar to a city fence at the entrance to the border.
The stupid game situation of "catch and let go" in border security management will be ended. For decades, a large number of illegal immigrants were released and entered American society shortly after their arrest, only because of the lack of adequate detention centers. Therefore, we will increase the capacity of detention centers to ensure that illegal immigrants will not flow into society and shorten the time needed to repatriate illegal immigrants. When illegal immigrants know that if they enter the United States illegally, they will be repatriated, and such illegal acts will be reduced in the future. In this way, our immigration system will be more orderly and safe. We are moving in a good direction, but there are still many things to do before us, and we will continue to work hard to ensure that the security of the border is not violated.
