Bridges are the master of architecture. There are some unique bridges in the history of Chinese and foreign architecture. The following is a detailed introduction to world-famous bridges with unique architectural features brought by the Architecture Network.
Mostar Old Bridge (Serbo-Croatian: Stari most, also translated as Mostar Old Bridge) is a 16th-century bridge in Mostar, Bosnia and Herzegovina, spanning Nere Teva River.
Building structure
The Mostar Ancient Bridge is arched, 4 meters wide and 29 meters long. There is a stone bridgehead at each end of the bridge. The bridge arches are constructed of local stone. The current shape of the arch is due to extensive irregular deformation of the inner cambered surface of the arch. The bridge's piers are made of limestone and are connected to wing walls on the water's edge of the cliff.
Construction History
Construction
The original Mostar Ancient Bridge was ordered to be built by Suleiman I in 1557 to replace the original wooden structure with poor stability. Make a suspension bridge. Construction work began in 1557 and took 9 years. According to records, the bridge was completed in the year 974 of the Islamic calendar, which converted to the Gregorian calendar was between July 19, 1556 and July 7, 1567. Little is known about the construction process of the bridge. What is recorded and preserved is legend and memory. The builder of the bridge was Mimar Hayruddin. It was a bridge of unprecedented proportions and failure was punishable by death, and the designers were recorded preparing to hold a funeral on the day the scaffolding was finally removed from the fully completed bridge. When the bridge was completed, it became the widest man-made arch bridge in the world. Some of the related technical issues remain a mystery: how to erect the scaffolding; how to transport the stones from one side of the river to the other; how to keep the scaffolding reliable during such a long construction period. Therefore, this bridge can be ranked among the greatest works of its time.
Destroyed
The Old Bridge of Mostar was destroyed on November 9, 1993 during the Bosnian War after standing for 427 years. After the destruction, a temporary cable bridge was built on the site.
Bosnian Croat shelling was responsible for the destruction of the bridge. After the destruction of the ancient bridge in Mostar, a Bosnian Croat spokesman admitted that they deliberately destroyed it because of its strategic importance. The Croatian Defense Council, which had tried to protect the bridge from Bosnian Serb defenses, began shelling the bridge on November 8. However, three Zagreb engineers, one of whom testified at the trial, were not responsible for the destruction of the bridge, which was destroyed by a mine activated within Bosnian territory. A German expert believes that this analysis is reasonable from a technical perspective. Slobodan Praljak, commander of the Croatian Defense Council, is currently being charged by the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia for ordering the destruction of the bridge. The presiding judge, Jean-Claude Antonetti, recently stated that it has not yet been proven that the troops of the Croatian Defense Council destroyed the ancient bridge, nor who destroyed it and how.
Reconstruction
After the war, the plan to rebuild the ancient bridge in Mostar was put on the agenda. The World Bank, UNESCO, the Aga Khan Trust for Culture and the World Heritage Fund have formed a coalition to oversee the reconstruction of Mostar’s ancient bridge and ancient city centre. Other funding has been provided by Italy, the Netherlands, Turkey, Croatia, the Council of Europe Development Bank, and the government of Bosnia and Herzegovina. In October 1998, UNESCO established a national committee of experts to examine the design and reconstruction work. Depending on the decision, it will be restored as close to its original appearance as possible, using the same techniques and materials. Hungarian army divers fished out the original stone from the river and used it in the construction of the arch bridge. The remaining stone was obtained from local quarries. The reconstruction of the Old Bridge in Mostar started on June 7, 2001 and was completed on July 23, 2004.
