What are some effective ways to name characters in a story?

When I was writing short stories, my stories sucked, but most people who read my work said the character names were attractive. My technique is to list the characteristics of the character and what percentage of the character that characteristic is. It doesn't have to be perfect, but it helps me see who my character is.

Let me think of a heroine. She is 30 strong fighter (probably kendo), 30 shy, 20 high school student, she is a high school student but it has no influence on others), 10 poor (same as high school thing.

I looked up words related to it. I googled "Japanese mythical samurai" (because of the kendo aspect) and a Wikipedia page came up about God of War. I was looking for something that sounded cool and easy to pronounce in English. The name. I found "Nes" in that part of Egypt and I usually add or remove some letters to make it English and hide the fact that it comes from somewhere else but I like the sound of "Nes" I think. There is an out-of-lexicon pronunciation that helps readers distinguish heroines from others

I usually research mythology, alchemy, or other esoteric stuff and find the most forgotten things in their themes. . One time I took an old place name and twisted it so it wasn't recognizable.

For the surname, I usually do the same thing but capture other characteristics of the character. I have to find a name that is related to shyness, poverty, and high school (I assume young).

I connected the two words together and transformed them to make them different. Familiar enough not to make the reader uncomfortable, a classic surname prefix is ??great for hiding it.

For example, one of my favorite names is John. Quartz. John was just plain old, nothing special. Quartz came from the day we were discussing last names with my best friend, and I was wearing a watch with the word "Quartz" on it, and the word was a time traveler. Look.

Please don't use John in any novels or you'll make me and my best friend unhappy
