The ancient city of Shanhaiguan was called Yuguan, also known as Yuguan, and Linlvguan. It was named Shanhaiguan because it leaned on Yanshan Mountain to the north and connected to the Bohai Sea to the south.
It is said that more than 600 years ago, after Zhu Yuanzhang became emperor, he issued a decree to send General Xu Da and Military Advisor Liu Bowen to the frontier area north of the capital to besiege and fortify the city. This must be completed within two years. Xu Da and Liu Bowen received the order and set off with their troops immediately, and soon arrived at the frontier fortress. Later, the two of them successfully completed the project and returned to the court. Zhu Yuanzhang asked them if they had given a name to the city defense of this frontier fortress.
Liu Bowen took a step forward and said, "I don't dare to act rashly. It's just that the city is surrounded by mountains in the south and the sea in the north. It can be said to be the gateway between mountains and seas. Long live the sage. When Zhu Yuanzhang heard this, he waved his hand and said: " Okay, let’s call it Shanhaiguan! ”
