Henan, formerly known as Zhongyuan, Zhongzhou, and Yuzhou, or simply "Yu", was named Henan because most of it was located south of the Yellow River in history. Henan is located in central and eastern China, in the middle and lower reaches of the Yellow River.
As of the end of 2017, Henan *** has jurisdiction over 17 prefecture-level cities, 1 provincial-level county-level administrative unit, 52 municipal districts, 20 county-level cities, and 85 counties, with the provincial capital Zhengzhou City , with a permanent population of 95.5913 million, ranking third in China.
