Six conditions for name change in the Civil Code

Legal analysis: The name can be changed under the following circumstances: 1. The name or the homophony of the name violates public order and good customs; 2. The name or the homophony of the name is likely to cause gender confusion, misunderstanding by others, or hurt one's feelings; 3. The name contains uncommon characters; 4. Other special circumstances when the public security organ determines that the name needs to be changed.

Legal basis: Article 1015 of the "People's Republic of China and Civil Code" A natural person shall take his father's surname or mother's surname. However, if one of the following circumstances occurs, he may take his father's surname and his mother's surname. To choose a surname other than the mother's surname: (1) Choose the surname of other direct elder blood relatives; (2) Choose the surname of the caregiver because he is raised by someone other than the legal caregiver; (3) There are other legitimate reasons that do not violate public order and good customs. The surnames of natural persons from ethnic minorities can follow the cultural traditions and customs of their own ethnic groups.
