globally unique identification partition table (GPT) refers to the format of globally unique identification disk partition table. It is a part of the Extensible Firmware Interface (EFI) standard, which is used by Intel to replace the BIOS of personal computers. It is used to replace the Master Boot Record (MBR) partition table in the BIOS system that stores the address and size information of logical blocks at 32bits.
For those disks with a sector of 512 bytes, the MBR partition table does not support partitions with a capacity greater than 2.2TB. However, some hard disk manufacturers have noticed this limitation and upgraded their disks with larger capacity to 4KB sectors, which means that the upper limit of the effective capacity of MBR has been raised to 16TiB.
